Please help Joe McCloskey save his home

"If there is such a thing as Karma, then saving Joe's home will be easy. You see, Joe is my friend, not just any friend, but my oldest and most revered friend. I count my real friends on one hand, not acquaintances, but someone you would trust your wife and kids to in a pinch. I have known him over 35 years and have witnessed his unlimited generosity, empathy, and spirituality towards his fellow men and animals, a man who gives till he has nothing left.

Until ten years ago or so, Joe was a Farrier. You know, a "horseshoer" for you who only know the rudiments of the Equine lovers. However, he was not just ANY farrier. Joe was first and foremost a HEALER. He had left school to learn the trade working as an unpaid apprentice with an old, but famous farrier of great skills back when he was just a teen. He wanted to learn from the best, and so, he was willing to break his back for no pay, other than the knowledge of healing and shoeing properly.

He accumulated what knowledge and skills he could before the old man died, and went out on his own. He quickly built a successful trade, soon sought out by the rich and famous that played polo, did dressage competition and jumping. These animals often cost a fortune and are jealously taken care of by their owners. To earn the trust of people to take care of multimillion-dollar horses, you must earn great respect and word of mouth. Joe could make the lame walk. Seriously, many times he was sought out by folks who were dreading the idea of their beloved animals never being able to walk, let alone compete again. Joe fixed them.

While his compensation from this clientele earned him a great living, it still required his own hard labor, and while he could have a helper, the main work still was done by his hands (and back) alone. Born with the “Curse of the Irish” he finally joined AA and recently celebrated his 40th year of sobriety. He married, was blessed with a son, Joe, and free of the chains of addiction he went on to change his life, and the lives of countless others through the unending selfless giving he practiced. Having been given a precious gift, Joe gave and gave, not just to other suffering alcoholics and addicts but especially to all animals since his love extended to all God’s creatures. I know of many instances where Joe went and practiced “miracles” on common pet horses owned by people who could never afford his kind of expertise. Joe did it for free and the satisfaction of seeing the animal stop suffering. He often expressed to me how someone years later, never having forgotten his kindness, did something nice for him or someone he knew. His faith in the goodness of the Universe was unshakeable.

Then tragedy struck. Several years back, he was kicked by a horse and injured much worse than he thought. He tried working through the pain, but one day he could not move, and he sought medical help. Unfortunately, he was treated and operated on by a doctor not properly trained to deal with back injuries and the surgery caused great harm. He was unable to walk, acquiring a “drop foot”, and worse, was in constant pain. The doctor who did the “meatball” surgery as others who examined him later, explained that the doctor covered his tracks well and it was difficult to prove malpractice. To this day, the pain has only gotten worse, and often at night, Joe cannot sleep since he finds it impossible to find a comfortable posture.

In spite of these inflictions, Joe is a fighter and has for the last few years been building an insurance business. Often working under great pain, he has studied hard and acquired extensive knowledge and underwriters and is slowly building a good business. However, he has fallen behind in his mortgage payments and the modest house he, his wife, and many animals have lived in for 30 years is soon to be foreclosed on.

He has just over 90 days to come up with $35,000 plus legal fees to save his home. With the many dogs, kittens, and birds he has rescued, and the relatively low mortgage payments he has now, it would be impossible to find any place at all that would accommodate the family at a price they could afford. He works from a home office, and with the weight of the foreclosure removed, he would be able to increase his attention to business and reap increased income from the solid base he has established. We aren’t just saving Joe, we are also saving 3 dogs, 2 kittens, and several birds including the African Grey, “Vinnie”, who gives voice to the entire ark of a family.

All of us that know him said the same thing when he was injured then crippled through the surgery. “How can such a bad thing happen to such a giving, loving man?” It is the eternal question. Not once in the past years since his affliction have I heard Joe complain or whine. He has battled endlessly to provide and survive. I am sure that if all the Equestrian people who knew Joe when he was practicing knew his situation, they would come to his aid. Perhaps some reading this know him and will respond.

This is his last chance. There is no plan “B”. If the good people who read this do not help as they can, then the consequences of him losing his home are more than I can imagine. With this Armageddon facing him just 90 days away, he has not lost faith. He is not complaining. He asks me what will happen to his animal family and wife. He never mentions himself.

Helping Joe is an affirmation of the faith that he and so many rely on to overcome life’s adversities. It is a vote of confidence that good people who do good things deserve a just end. Joe will keep fighting until his dying day. Pushing 70 and in constant pain, hunched over from the injury, walking with a cane and finding it difficult even to sit, he keeps on smiling and living his faith. At 70 myself, I do what I can, but have limited resources. I also am relying on faith that says enough good people will come forward to Save Joe and his house. Please help bring justice to the Universe. Peace and love to you all.”

I would like to thank everyone who has read this and if you could, please share it. It’s hard throwing this out to the universe, however there are times you must lose your ego and think about my family and my wonderful rescue animals (it’s more like who rescued who?)

Don’t worry about not making a big enough donation, every bit helps. That’s why I ask you to pass it on.

Also, several months ago, I tried to do a GoFundMe for a surgery that I had hoped would allow me to walk without assistance and possibly give me some relief from my daily pain. However, this is far too important, so I am going to apply the $533 I received from that.

God bless you all. I am hoping to stay in my home of 30 years.

Sincerely, Joe.

Also, I would like to thank my friend, Bob, for writing this letter.
