Please help Leland “Duke” Hall

Many of you that know Duke know how special he is to all of us. He is a very caring, funny, loving, and a dedicated person. His smile and laugh are contagious and his catchy phrases are unforgettable. He is a wonderful son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, brother in law, coworker and partner to my brother Eric.
Duke was hospitalized November 28, 2018 and the days that followed were the scariest days any of us have ever experienced. While Duke was at work, he began feeling sick and before the night was over he was having unexplainable symptoms. Within a day, Duke became unresponsive, suffered multiple strokes and went into septic shock. After hours of trying to diagnose Duke, the doctors had found that he had developed an atrio-esophageal fistula which is considered to be very rare and the most lethal complication of an atrial fibrillation ablation (a procedure he had on October 25th to correct atrial fibrillation). On December 1, 2018, Duke had a stent put in the esophagus to temporarily prevent the infection and strokes from reoccurring. During the procedure, Duke went into cardiac arrest on the operating table but he was resuscitated by the physicians and OR staff. On December 26 Duke had surgery which lasted an entire day to repair his heart and his esophagus, requiring him to be on bypass. To complete the repair the doctors had to take muscle from his side as well.
I’m happy to say that the surgery went well. Although he isn’t out of the woods yet, he is headed in the right direction. His recovery is expected to take months as the doctors continue to keep a close eye on him. Duke has been out from work since his procedure in October but he returned for two days before he began to have more complications from the initial procedure which he then had to be hospitalized until present day.
Duke will be in the hospital for an unknown amount of time but then he will be sent to rehabilitation. Although Duke’s coworkers have been generous enough donate paid leave, it will eventually run out in a few weeks since he is fairly new employee at Memorial Hospital. During this time he will not have any income from his employer and he will have medical expenses that need to be covered. We are asking for any bit of help for him; any amount helps and we are very lucky to have the support from everyone. Many of his family, friends and coworkers have been praying for him and helping us by bringing my brother and his mother a cooked meal, helping with the dogs, and giving us the emotional support that is very much needed. The love and support has been more than we ever imagined and we are very grateful for everyone!
