Please help me keep my place at vet school

Since I was two years old I have wanted to be a Vet. Over the years I have faced many obstacles, however I’m currently facing a financial dilemma I simply cannot overcome on my own. Due to me already having completed a degree, I am not able to get further funding to complete a second one. My tuition fees are set at £29,250 per annum and I have to self fund this.

In 2019 I finally received the offer I had always dreamt of and gained a place at Glasgow University to study Veterinary Medicine. The road to reaching this goal had been far from easy, and I had to obtain a first degree to even be considered to study Veterinary Medicine.

After successfully completing my first year, something I have only been able to do by working all hours, and relying on help from family and friends, I reluctantly had to take the decision to defer entry into my second year, in order to try to raise the funding for the further four years of my course. I am desperately hoping to continue my training but I am struggling to find the funding. This has proved particularly difficult since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the effect that it has had on industry.

In order to try to raise the funds for the second year of my Veterinary Degree I have written to and spoken on the phone to hundreds of companies including, but not limited to; pharmaceutical companies, charities, Veterinary practices, corporate veterinary practices, leading Associations (including the BVA and BEVA), artificial insemination companies, training companies, government bodies and agricultural companies etc. but to no avail.

Prior to studying Veterinary Medicine, I completed a three year Bachelor of Science Degree in Equine Science and achieved a high Second Class Honours Degree (First Division) (2:1). This was an area I found extremely interesting and furthered my passion to help animals

Following that I spent 18 months working with animals where I learnt valuable real life skills which I believe I have been able to transfer into my second degree to keep me focused and working hard. Whilst studying at University, I will also be working practically with animals ensuring that my learning doesn’t stop in the books.

My dream of becoming a Vet was enhanced when I got Nelly, my horse, and further when rescuing a beautiful but extremely troubled miniature horse, Fairy. There has been blood, sweat and many tears over the years with both horses but it’s certainly made me realise the love and kindness animals can give and I feel it is time to start giving back.

Without your kind help there is simply no way I will get the chance to achieve my dream of becoming a fully qualified Veterinarian, and start giving back to all animals large or small, in a way they truly deserve.

The thought of having to give up my dream, in all honesty, is shattering. I have sat up many a night searching desperately (sometimes through tears) for anything and anyone that can help me reach my goal. I am so willing, extremely resilient and I work bloody hard.

I cannot describe how it feels to know that without help now, I will not be able to pursue my studies. I have always been extremely independent and self-sufficient but I simply cannot continue on this path without some external support for my fees.

Anything at all you can offer would be hugely appreciated and thank you so much for reading!
