Please Help My Lifelong Friends Recover From Hurricanes Helene and Milton!

Hi! My name is Susan Dissler Rosner from East Setauket, New York. Thank you for taking a few moments to read this story about my friends of 60 years, Nancy and Peter Kehoe. Originally from New York and New Jersey, they lost their home in Redington Beach, Florida due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
  • On September 25 and subsequently October 9, 2024 they were evacuated from their modest home in advance of approaching Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Through the past 40 years, and a labor of love and handiwork, they proudly put their heart and soul into creating an inviting home for themselves and their daughter, Caroline.
  • They had just celebrated 50 years of marriage with a family gathering in July. Nancy and Peter are warm, caring, loving and supportive people. Together, we have celebrated life's precious moments including both of our marriages and the birth of our daughters. Although life has given them many obstacles, they remain devoted to one another.
  • Nancy’s health issues have been a challenge for the couple, which included two cancers, a hip replacement, and a car accident which left her with a broken leg in two places, as well as Peter with multiple injuries. With a tremendous spirit, they pushed through these troubles and recovered.
However on the horizon, more trouble was on its way, with
Hurricanes Helene and Milton. In the past few years, they’ve
experienced too many seasons where they had to evacuate,
but none with the expected power of these two.
  • On the evening of the 25th, the eight foot storm surge from Helene hit their home. Redington Beach was considered a disaster zone. Residents were not allowed access to the barrier island for several days. When Peter and his brother-in–law finally saw the house, they were shocked by the devastation. The front door had swelled and could not be opened. The garage door was bent from the force of the water. The two men had to enter the house through a broken window.
  • Six feet of water had forced its way into the house and destroyed the contents of every room. The heavy furniture was tossed upside down, and carried away into other rooms. Everything was soaking wet and the stench of seawater and sewage was unbearable. A thick mud-like gunk covered the floor in every room.
  • The next day, the ceiling in Caroline’s bedroom collapsed and exposed the sky through a hole in the roof.
  • Can you imagine how heartbreaking it was for Nancy and Peter, at ages 71 and 73, to have lost their home and all of its contents from 50 years of marriage? To see it broken and piled up like wet garbage was more than they could bear. They lost treasured family heirlooms, their wedding album, family photos, baby pictures of Caroline, their great grandmother’s china set, most of their clothes, and everything they had worked so hard for over the years.
  • And to add insult to injury, Hurricane Milton smashed through on October 9th and wreaked even more havoc and loss. Their garage door and side door were now completely ripped off, exposing all the waterlogged contents of their house to the outside elements.
  • To help my currently homeless dear friends cover costs not covered by insurance, your donation would be greatly appreciated. However large or small, your contribution would go towards helping Nancy and Peter rebuild their lives. It will allow them to make emergency home repairs related to the extreme water and wind damage.
  • Your donation will help pay for basic living expenses including clothing, furniture, roof repair, treatment for mold and toxins from storm surge waste, electrical hazards, and floor and wall repair. All funds collected will be sent directly to them via a bank transfer and will go towards covering some of the astronomical costs of restoring everything that they lost.
  • We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your prayers and for any assistance you can provide to help Nancy and Peter get their lives back on track again.
  • God Bless You!
