Rahila's story
Rahila is a 29 years old lady from Mumbai, India - a genuine soul, kind, caring, soft-spoken. Rahila is married with a 2.5 yr old baby girl. Rahila grew up in a humble household (her father drives a rickshaw in Mumbai) and couldn't even finish her university due to poor financial conditions.
Just like millions of people who suffered during the pandemic, Rahila was diagnosed with Covid in December 2020. However, unlike the millions who recovered from varying degrees of suffering, Rahila, unfortunately, has been experiencing the aftereffects of Covid. This was at the same time when Rahila and her husband decided to start a family in 2020. The couple was happy to welcome a new baby in October 2020. However, this took a toll on Rahila's mental health which declined significantly. This resulted in Rahila experiencing severe depression, which to date continues.
Following Covid and the pressures of a new baby, what was to follow was even more shocking and heartbreaking. Rahila suffered a brain stroke in February 2021. Rahila's health took another terrible turn when she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis straight after the brain stroke. Tuberculosis severely impacted her lungs too. As you can imagine, this was too much and left Rahila in a coma for 3 months in 2021. This was one of the worst times for Rahila and her family.
Rahila has been supporting herself and her family through self-employment. Rahila had an online business selling ethnic Indian clothing and because of her mental health and previous brain stroke, doctors advised her to give that up. This left her with NO INCOME. Rahila's husband has a job at a grocery shop supporting Rahila and their baby. Her husband earns a meagre 15,000 Indian rupees or £140 or $182 per month. This cannot sustain the recurring medical bills.
I wish I could say that this fundraiser was only to help them survive however Rahila's health keeps deteriorating. Rahila's brain has developed a serious fungal infection or tumour since late 2021.
Ever since Rahila's health took a toll, Rahila and her husband have sold their house to pay for Rahila's treatment so far (~£4,600 or $6,000). Furthermore, the small amount of gold jewellery Rahila owned was sold to pay for the ongoing required medicines and scans. Rahila has to do an MRI scan every month to check the status of her brain and regular medications and injections (twice a week).
Rahila has been supported by friends & family and their network however to deal with the brain fungal tumour, the specialist has recommended surgery. This is something Rahila and her family cannot afford and the main reason I have created this fundraiser. Surgery is very urgent if it's not done, Rahila might suffer from the stroke again and could be paralysed.
For the surgery, Rahila needs approx INR Rs.700,000 or £6500 GBP or $8,600 USD. Rahila has raised £1,300 or $1,700 so far from her friends, family and their network. The rest is what this fundraiser will hopefully help including medicines/scans post the surgery.
My sincere gratitude to you for reading this. I will be eternally grateful for any amount that you can donate no matter how small.
You can also help us by sharing Rahila’s story on social media and your network.
Thank you so much
