The Long Beach Historical and Preservation Society was founded in 1980 to educate the public about Long Beach and preserve and enhance the city's architectural and historical heritage. Our mission is to inform the residents and the general public about the history of Long Beach and preserve artifacts and archival material related to the history of Long Beach. Our museum, located in Long Beach at 226 West Penn Street, is 113 years old and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Long Beach Historical Society has a permanent charter with the state of New York Education Department. Our existence is an asset to the community and an educational tool that endeavors to keep our unique heritage alive.
This year as we have emerged from Covid, we hosted all twelve 4th grade classes from the Long Beach schools at the museum as part of our community curriculum. We held educational presentations about the bay houses and the Lido Club Hotel. In addition, we have hosted local artists and book signings with local authors. Ours is an all-volunteer organization, and we are proud of our programs and achievements.
For the past two years, the Covid-19 health crisis has caused pain in all of our lives, and our historical museum is no exception. We have not held our major fundraising events, including historic house tours and a Boardwalk Arts and Crafts Fair. These fundraisers are critical to our operating costs.
The museum needs repairs and significant restoration work. All 47 windows in our architecturally significant museum need to be restored. Our basement floor is cracking, our chimney needs work, and numerous other projects are needed to restore our museum to its original glory.
Please consider donating to The Long Beach Historical Society's Restoration Fund. We seek $25,000 in our generous donations to begin restoration work on our most urgent projects. No donation is too small, and we appreciate every penny.
Our motto is: "We bring history to the community and the community to history."
