Serena Mae was born on March 29th with Apert Syndrome which is a rare genetic mutation of a certain gene affecting her bones and her brain.Apert syndrome is characterized by craniosynostosis, a condition in which the fibrous joints (sutures) between bones of the skull close prematurely. Her skull, fingers and toes are all fused and her brain did not separate into two hemispheres like it should have. The ventricles in her brain are very large and are connected. As of now Serena’s can't breathe from her nose and that hinders her ability to feed. She is currently in the NICU with a breathing and feeding tube. This evening ENT came and suggested a CT scan to evaluate the condition of her nasal airways. Currently the doctors are unable to fit a 2.2mm scope down one side of her nasal passage and can barely fit the scope on the other. She will be going to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah tomorrow afternoon to get the proper care that she needs.
The options for Serena are to pull the tube to see if any of the swelling goes down, stent the nasal passage or a tracheotomy.She will have to have multiple surgeries on her skull, and brain before she turns a year old, as well as numerous surgeries for her hands, feet, her face, and nasal passages from now until around the age of 6 years old.
This baby girl has wonderful loving parents that really need assistance in getting baby Serena the care that she needs. Medical costs are very expensive as we all know, and the cost of the care that Serena needs is a lot. Please find it in your heart to help the Garrison family in their time of need. Anything you are able to contribute will be greatly appreciated.
