Please help support Bruce Shawkey

My good friend and fellow watch enthusiast suffered a devastating stroke in January that disabled his left side. He is undergoing therapy and has recovered partial use of his left hand and left leg. It has profoundly affected his ability to live a full life although there are certainly people who are worse off than him.

It was especially devastating for Bruce because he and I both have a love of vintage wristwatches and this will profoundly affect his ability to work with fine watches and utilizing fine motor skills.

Also Bruce was an accomplished piano player and may be again someday. But for now his left hand is affected to the degree that he can only play the most simple of songs.

Bruce is trying to chart a new path onto life and he continues to make great progress. But it is slow going.

Perhaps the biggest challenge is paying for medical bills and having enough left over for living expenses. Yes, he does have some insurance through the healthcare marketplace and soon will be on Medicare. However, there are bills to be paid that represent his deductible, co-pays and various uncovered expenses.

Bruce has never been one to ask for money from friends or relatives. But I worry that his savings will be depleted sooner rather than later. Dying poor in America is a terrible thing that I would not wish on my worst enemy. On behalf of Bruce I am asking you for any financial help that you may be able to give. Even a few dollars will help if you feel so inclined.

I know that many of you have come to know Bruce and have appreciated his numerous contributions to the watch world over the years. And if he is a friend outside the world of watches you know that he is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He did not deserve this terrible tragedy, but he is dealing with it bravely and taking it day-by-day. It would be a shame to not get the best care he can due to lack of funds.

If you feel so moved, please consider contributing to Bruce's financial survival. Please do it now, as we tend to forget the things we put off. Good intentions don't pay the medical bills!
