Nicole is one of the most gracious, selfless people I have ever known; she has devoted her life to helping those in need. It's time we help her.
Nicole recently found out she will need to have a mastectomy and hysterectomy this year. Nicole has an extremely high risk (>80%) for breast and ovarian cancer and knew that she would need to have these surgeries one day. However, she was previously told by doctors it could wait until her late 30’s and early 40’s. Due to a recent doctor visit and changes in health, she has been advised to have both surgeries as soon as possible. As one can imagine, this was devastating for her to find out.
Nicole has lost both her grandmother (2005) and mother (2017) to ovarian cancer. Nicole was very close with her mother and cared for her in the final stages of her life. Now, Nicole often cares for her father who is in his 70’s. I have lived with Nicole for over three years now, and I have witnessed her again and again dropping everything on a moment's notice to care for those she loves. Nicole is quick to put others before herself. She is dedicated to her career working with elderly, blind and disabled individuals in the community and in nursing homes. She is one of the strongest and most caring people I know. Now is a time that we can give back to her.
We are asking for donations to help with the cost of surgery, time taken off work and care she might need to rehabilitate. At this time, it is unknown what the costs of the surgery will be. I will update this page with further information in the coming weeks. The biggest expense will be time taken off work as Nicole will still have many bills such as rent, student loan payments, etc. to pay, but she will likely need six weeks time to recover. It is unknown at this time what type of mastectomy will be done but there is a possibility that there will need to be multiple surgeries for this and additional recovery time. Nicole’s doctor estimated that total recovery time from a complete mastectomy and hysterectomy would be about a year. Of course, if you know Nicole, she will likely try to be up and working again as soon as possible. Again, I will update this page with further information.
It is a humbling experience to ask others for help and we would like to acknowledge that many might not be in a position to give. That is fine, but I ask that you think of Nicole during this time and pray for her strength and pray that her mother gives her guidance as Nicole is very scared of what these surgeries will be like and what recovery will entail. Nicole has a handful of close friends and family in the area that she will be relying on heavily for support and recovery after these surgeries. We will update this page with more information on when her surgeries will be if you would like to bring meals or visit with her after her surgeries.
