My name is Taryn, and I am the proud daughter of Patrick Finbar McGarry O’Dea. Together with my brother Sean, we are fighting for justice for our father. Today, we are asking for your help as we work to overturn what we believe is a deeply flawed conviction and unjust sentence against a man who acted out of love and courage. Our father tried to protect two vulnerable children from abuse, but instead of being recognised for his bravery, he is now paying a devastating price.
Our dad is a former soldier who served during a complex and difficult conflict, resulting in a severe physical disability that causes him immense daily pain, having sustained injuries from four landmines during his military service. Additionally, he suffers from Complex PTSD–a condition that has profoundly affected his life. This is not something that should be exacerbated by the isolating and punishing conditions of prison. For six long years, he has been subjected to stringent bail conditions, including periods requiring the use of an ankle monitor and daily reporting to law enforcement, all while enduring the emotional and financial strain of numerous court appearances and legal battles.
We, his family, have closely observed his suffering throughout this ordeal. The trial, conviction, and harsh sentence of three and a half years (including twenty months of non-parole and the threat of deportation) do not sufficiently take into account his true intentions—specifically, to safeguard vulnerable children.
The funds we are seeking will allow us to ensure our father receives the fair legal representation he desperately needs. In addition to his PTSD, he also suffers from hearing loss and at times, was denied crucial support during his court proceedings. With the help of a skilled solicitor or Barrister, we can challenge the injustices he has faced. Your support can help restore his dignity, reclaim his life, and ensure that his actions are seen for what they were: an effort to protect innocent children from harm.
Together, we can make a difference.
