Hello, my name is Lauren and I’m desperately trying to help raise funds for my brother and his wife’s dog that is currently fighting for his life…..
Remington is a 2 year old Pomsky (Pomeranian Husky mix). He came into our life at a time of grief, as we had lost our White German Shepherd Odin & our Siberian Husky Thor both suddenly & within the same year. When we saw Remington’s face the world of darkness & sadness was lifted. Remington is the happiest soul and brings light and joy to all he meets. He loves to give kisses and sit on laps for a cuddle, but zooms around the house chasing balls and methodically rips apart his toys because all he really wants is the squeaker. He is his mom’s shadow, so much so that he would get stepped on if you weren’t paying attention. Hence the addition of a jingle bell to his collar and the nickname of Mr Jingles was born…
On the morning of Christmas Eve we awoke to a sick Remington. He was completely fine the night before. In fact as I wrapped his Christmas presents that night prior his dad held him back so as not to see them or get into them, & Remington put up quite a fight as he knew those were HIS presents. We awoke the next morning to find him unable to move, not even stand up. As I cradled him I could feel he was hot. We checked his gums, they were pale. We immediately called the emergency vet and as Remington laid on my chest I could feel his heart beat, racing & abnormal, his breathing labored. They agreed to see him right away, and we were there and he was in the doctors hands within 15 minutes from my call. But the news was not good, the blood work revealed issues with his red blood cells. Then lots of words, names, things we knew nothing of came at us. He was diagnosed with Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, or IMHA. They ruled out all causes but 90% of dogs diagnosed with this there is no why, and the onset is sudden. Healthy one minute and dying the next. This is an autoimmune disease in dogs in which the body attacks its own red blood cells. His own red blood cells are killing any new red blood cells, because it thinks they are bad/infected/sick. This has lead to a very low red blood cell count and severe case of anemia. With his diagnosis came the recommendation for Cornell Veterinary Hospital. We waited on the approval for them to accept him, got a quote on treatment, and drove there immediately. The treatment was estimated at $3,000 to $5,500, this was to cover a high dose course of steroids to essentially kill off his current immune system, to try and kill off the red blood cells attacking him. This would then be followed with multiple blood transfusions, because although his red blood cells were regenerating the quality of them wasn’t so good or enough for what was being destroyed. On Christmas Day we prayed for a miracle for our little Angel, but the calls from Cornell with updates showed no significant progress. His tiny body is fighting this, he’s holding on. This morning Cornell said they recommend one last treatment, the most expensive treatment, option, TPE. They are hopeful this treatment will be the turning point and it’s the most in-depth. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a procedure that removes plasma from a patient in order to clear substances that may be present in the plasma and harmful to that patient. We knew this would be expensive, but didn’t realize how bad.. then the shock came, the cost for TPE treatment at Cornell for Remington is $18,000. We are told this is the only option left to push out the bad blood and see about fresh new blood rejuvenation, but we are short funds. The veterinary hospital will not start any treatment until they receive half of the $18,000 estimate. But we can’t in good faith start this process without knowing where the funds we are short will come from. His life depends on us raising this money. Please help! Any amount or just share to spread the word!
