Help a 94 yr old homeless vet have a perm home
Donation protected
Hi Everyone. My wife and I became aware of 94 year old veteran who was living in his van in the parking lot of a Walmart around Christmas last year. I don't think I have ever witnessed a sadder sight or situation. His name was Jerry Lewis, (yes, that's really his name) and he had been living in his van for over a year. After a quick run into Walmart to get him some basics, We loaded him up, and took him home with us for the holidays. Christmas presents took on new meaning last year. Watching this proud man tear up over getting something as everyday as pajamas was heartbreaking. He was so grateful for even the smallest gesture, that I almost felt guilty for the blessings my family enjoys. It was the sweetest holiday I can remember, even with our families being unable to join us due to Covid. We truly experienced the magic of Christmas, and the joy of giving to those less fortunate. After the holiday, we made arrangements for Jerry to stay with a family friend rather than going back to his van. We thought this was a permanent solution, but sadly his living arrangements have fallen apart. Jerry once again is on the verge of being homeless.
Unfortunately, our home is not conducive for a 94 yr old man with ambulatory issues. Since he doesn't need full time nursing care, only assistance, VA retirement facilities are not an option. However, we cannot and will not allow this sweet man to fall under the radar again. We are still actively searching for an assisted living situation for him, but are running out of avenues to pursue.
In the event that no other options become available, our remedy to this situation is to renovate our garage into a bedroom and bathroom for our new friend to live in permanently. We looked into refinancing our home to cover the expense, but because of the forbearance we were forced to accept when the covid shutdowns took place, we aren't able to do so until sometime late this summer. Jerry doesn't have that much time.
All proceeds will be used to cover Jerry's expenses to get him into an assisted living home or for renovations to accomodate him in our home. Any left over funds will be donated to a homeless veterans organization in hopes that this will not happen again.
Please help us provide for the most deserving of us. A Veteran, who protected our freedoms, who wants nothing more than a warm, safe place to live out his days. It's our turn to thank him for his service.
