Please help us raise solicitors fees!!
Hello, We are Ellis and Megan.
Last year (9th September 2023) we thought we had moved into our forever home. It was a perfect four bed bungalow in a quiet little village. The moving day was very stressful driving from Essex, to Kent and then all the way up to Alyesby. Needless to say we was shattered when we finally arrived at our perfect home. We were renting from a landlord who we thought we could trust. Oh how wrong we were.
We got there around 11pm and started to unload our belongings. Ellis went to build the bed and I started unpacking and settling in our little disabled dog.
Around 2am that night, I was woken up by what sounded like running water, coming from the upstairs bathroom. (Little did I know it was going to be alot worse) I woke Ellis up to go and see what was happening. That was when he had told me the bathroom ceiling was completely alight. In the panic we rushed to get my phone and I called the fire service, grabbed our dog and left the house in our pjs. Whilst leaving the house we could hear the roof tiles popping and cracking from the heat.
The fire service arrived in a matter of minutes, but it felt like forever!! They were amazing. We were in utter shock as anyone would be. They helped to keep us calm. Once the fire was out we were allowed to enter the least damaged part of the property. It was in there were we saw the extent of some of the damage. We had no home left and all our belongings was gone. Everything we had worked so hard for. Gone in one night. We was homeless!!
The next day we went back to the property to try and salvage what we could. But all our belongings were smoke/water damaged. We was advised by the fire department not to use anything with a plug to the extent of the damage.
After this Ellis lost his dream job in car restoration as we had no where to live and finding a property to rent in the housing market takes more then a few days.
The landlords insurance have accepted liability. As we didn't receive any EICR reports, and the smoke detector outside our bedroom needed changing back in 2016. And the fire was potentially cause by a smashed light bulb and pinned carpet to the wall in the storage eves. (We had no idea this was there) All this information was told to us by a forensic investigator.
Now here is where we need everyone's help.
We know times are tough and life is hard for everyone right now, but please even the smallest of donations would really help.
We've set this up because even now a year on we are still fighting with insurance to get a settlement to replace what we've lost.
While the landlords house has been redone and up for £100,000 more then when we was going to buy it. It just doesn't seem fair to lose everything from someone else's negligence!!
He had breached the terms of his own lease by allowing it to become uninhabitable due to faulty works.
We now need to seek legal advise again to settle this as its taking a toll on both of us mentally and financially.
Thankyou so much for taking the time to read this.. And we appreciate every donation made
to help us fight this battle!!!!
I've attached some photos so you can see the extent of the damage. And yes a few people have asked.. we was asleep in that bed!!
