Kenny Doggins Stebivka ... our best little boy, was attacked by two coyotes near our house on early Saturday morning. He has multiple injuries, puncture wounds all over is body, a spine disk injury, hernia, and more. He's currently at Dove Lewis and will likely spend at least one or two more nights there... We've paid what we have in the bank, used credit cards and yes, a new Care Credit account helped us let the Dove Lewis surgery go forward: We're already at $11,300... with possibly several more thousand for after-surgery / puncture wound care.
Surgery went well so far, hernia has been fixed -- no internal organ damage. Spinal cord is not severed, but bone fragments were found -- his 2nd disc had bone chips... but he will likely walk again. They thought the first xray showed showed a cracked skull, but the CT scan proved otherwise. Whew. He will not lose brain function. Scores of puncture wounds need to heal... but it did not appear that they went into the muscle much, the docs were worried Kenny would have tissue death in those places, but they're encouraged that he'll heal from this, too.
Kenny is a friend to everyone. For those of you who've met him, or those of you in the KFC (Kenny Fan Club) you already know what a miraculous little creature he is. He makes everyone feel special. His eyes beam out love... his unusual little personality just makes everyone love him. He guards his sister, Lulu when they're both outside. He is one in a million.
As gut-wrenching as it is to ask for help, I'm doing this gofundme because, as someone with no kids, Kenny and Lulu are Miri's and my family -- our fur-children. Kenny's been my number one grief support in the past three years -- with both my parents dying, and all the war stuff, oftentimes Kenny is the only one who can make me smile. Truly.
The funds from this campaign will go to pay for the surgery, the ICU stay, and a couple months of follow-up wound care, possibly physical therapy, too. We will be selling one of our two cars, and doing all manner of other things ... because this vet bill could get even higher. ... So if any one of you donates a larger sum and would like a house concert, a photo sesh... or anything else you know we do, we will do it!!!! After Kenny is healed up, I will be happy to give away my talent, my energy, my music to anyone who'd like a personal thank you. Or a Kenny Fan Club shirt. Or a video message song for a special occasion....
We cannot live without this beautiful creature. We just can't. Miri and I are devastated. I even witnessed Lulu, our other baby, crying.
Kenny is only 6. He could still have many years with us. He needs to live. That's the only way to say it. And he's a fighter! One of the vets said that it's astounding that he got away from those two coyotes. So -- he wants to -- and must live. It's going to be a long road ahead but the folks at Dove Lewis are cautiously optimistic!
I will post updates, and more photos ... because I know Kenny has many friends who truly have a major bond with him. He truly connects with the people he meets. People come over just to hang out with him.
Any little bit helps. For those of you in Portland, one day soon, when this is all over, I'd love you to come over and hang out with Kenny... to meet this very special being.
Thank you from the depths of our broken hearts.
Oh, and I also have venmo for those of you who'd rather do that. @darkadusty #2220 with Mirifoto logo.
