William Perry, had a heart attack on 6/4/23 and was rushed to the hospital that Sunday afternoon. He immediately went straight to the Intensive Care Unit ICU with a heart attack. Due to congestive heat failure, his EF (or heart function) was at 20% which is extremely low.

He also found out he had 3 spots on his liver which turned out to be liver cancer. After a week in ICU, he was sent down to the regular heart floor to get more stable and was given 2 stents to open up the clogged arteries from the heart attack. So now they are talking about doing a LIVER TRANSPLANT and putting in a defibrillate. His liver cancer is called HEPATO CELLULAR CARCINOMA.

All the while his ammonia levels were sky high. Ammonia levels are a direct result of his liver issues. High ammonia levels make you incompetent and unable to function.  This is extremely stressful for anyone; but especially on me, seeing William in the hospital just having had a heart attack and now dealing with a full grown man who thinks he’s a child. After they got his heart stable, it took another week to get his ammonia levels under control.

All the time, William is laying in a hospital bed withering away; losing all his muscle strength. Three weeks later they were ready to boot him out of the hospital. He could go straight to rehab or back home. Me and Jaysen discussed whether or not to send him to rehab but William had the final say and ultimately said he was NOT going to rehab.

But within 4 day of being at home, it quickly became obvious that it wasn't the best idea. William was so weak he could not get up off the bed, the toilet, or a chair without help.
After falling on the floor in the bathroom I had to call EMS to get him up. So that night he was admitted to a rehab facility to get him strong enough to be somewhat self sufficient.

He came home from Rehab after 2 weeks. In fairly good shape; still needing some assistance.

Five days later the ambulance was called AGAIN. William was having severe stomach cramps and was crying in pain. He all but begged the ambulance to take him to the hospital; which as you know men never want to go to the doctor.

He was readmitted to Duke again on 7/28 and was diagnosed with SBP (Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis). Which is a bacterial infection of the fluids around his stomach. This is a direct result of his liver cancer. On day 3 a doctor came in and put a port in his side and drained 3 liters of infected fluid from around his stomach. He stayed in the hospital for another full week this time. He was, ironically, able to leave the hospital on 8/4, his 59th birthday.

I haven’t left his side for a single night; sleeping in a pull out chair for 8 weeks.

William has been disabled for the past 8 years and I fought breast cancer a few years ago. Even though I won that battle, I was left unable to work a full time job, thus I’ve worked part time as a phlebotomist.  I am currently out work so I can take care of William and make sure he gets to ALL of his doctors appointments; sometimes 2-3 per day. Therefore, we are financially strapped.
Any donation you could make would be GREAT APPRECIATED!!
