I hope this letter finds you well. I am absolutely thrilled to share some incredible news with you—I have been elected to serve as a delegate for Vice President Kamala Harris at the upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC)! Click this link for more information.

I am soliciting your support in assisting me with covering my travel expenses for this crucial election. I will be attending the DNC Conference, August 18 – 23, 2024. Attending the DNC will involve several days of active engagement, collaboration, and networking with other delegates, party leaders, and policymakers. However, the associated costs, particularly for my hotel accommodations, pose a financial challenge for me even though I have been saving for this conference since I was elected in April 2024.

Estimated Costs

The combined estimate for all costs is $3000 (airfare, transportation, hotel, and meals). The Democratic Party does not provide any financial assistance. Therefore, any support you could provide would be immensely appreciated and would enable me to fully focus on my duties as a delegate without any additional stress.

Estimated Cost Breakdown

$421.47 per night x 5 nights = $2107.35

Roundtrip airfare (including baggage fees): $350

Transportation to and from airport in DC: $40 taxi each way = $80

Transportation to and from airport in Chicago: $50 taxi each way = $100

Meals: The DC Democratic Party will provide breakfast each morning. My estimated out-of-pocket expenses for two additional meals are $56 per day, totaling $336 for 6 days (based on the Illinois government per diem rate of $20 for lunch and $36 for dinner in Chicago; (click link for more information).

Background

When I was elected by the DC Democratic Party in April, I was running to be a delegate supporting President Biden in his reelection. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would have the honor of voting to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate at the DNC Convention. It is unbelievable that I will have the opportunity to participate in the campaign for our country’s first female and woman of color presidential election.

Since President Biden honorably stepped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Harris, the excitement for her campaign has been absolutely electrifying! Vice President Harris is skilled, respectable, intelligent, knowledgeable, and more than capable of leading as a political leader.

I am committed to making the most of this opportunity to advocate for our community and contribute to the successful election of Vice President Kamala Harris. It is unbelievable that I will have the opportunity to participate in the campaign for our country’s first female and woman of color presidential election.

Additional Information Related to my Journey to the DNC

During the week of July 21, 2024, I participated in the virtual nominating process to submit Vice President Kamala Harris’s name on the ballot. The minute I hit the submission button, I broke down in tears of joy, overwhelmed by the fact that I was actively participating in history in the making. Within the next week, I will participate in the virtual roll call to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Presidential Nominee. Due to deadlines that need to be met, this is a very different process from past years.

As you know, the significance of the upcoming election cannot be overstated. The decisions we make and the leadership we endorse will shape the future of our nation. My participation as a delegate is crucial in representing our community’s voice and ensuring that our shared values and priorities are brought to the forefront of national discourse. As I network with other elected officials, I am committed to fighting for the rights of women to protect their bodies, advocate for continued funding for early childhood programs such as Head Start, and support DC's bid for statehood. As an educator, I want to look into my students' eyes and know that I will do all I can to protect their future. Living with a disability, it is my own personal fight to ensure Americans have affordable healthcare and prescription medications.
