Pledge a hedge! A lifeline for nature

Lifelines is a St Ethelburga's project that connects community and faith groups with farmers, helping to plant a huge network of hedgerows and wildlife corridors across the country.

With UK biodiversity plummeting and global carbon emissions still soaring, it's time to put our differences aside, get our hands in the earth, and start planting!

Hedgerows are amazing. They unite and connect habitats. They provide homes and food to thousands of species of birds, mammals, and insects, and they create safe corridors for them to move through the country. They store carbon in their deep roots, improve soil quality, and reduce flood risk. They provide birdsong and blossom, and they transform our footpaths. They are a lifeline for the natural world, and for us too.

Through Lifelines, we bring communities together to plant these magical wildlife corridors, building connections in both the human and more-than-human world.

Help us connect wildlife and communities. Become a hedge-funder!
  • One metre of new hedgerow costs us £15 to plant. Simply choose the number of metres you’d like to have planted on your behalf.
  • A donation of £150 covers the cost to plant 10m of hedgerow, providing shelter to thousands of species hopefully long after we are gone.
  • On a typical Lifelines weekend we plant 200m of hedgerow. Feeling generous? Fund an entire weekend!
  • Want to pledge a hedge on behalf of a tree-loving loved one? Get in touch and we will provide them with a personalised hedgerow certificate (and annual updates on its growth).
Last year, we planted more than 3000m of hedgerows and more than 17,000 tress on farms across England and Wales.

This winter, with your help, we hope to plant even more!

How does Lifelines work?
Our train-the-trainers weekend workshop teaches community and faith leaders the practical skill of planting hedgerows, so that they can organise their own volunteer group, be matched with one of our participating farmers, and take part in an unforgettable weekend of planting.

Much more than a volunteering weekend, groups have an immersive experience of nature connection, learn the principles of spiritual ecology, build human relationships across differences, and come away with a deeper knowledge and love for the natural world.

Funds will go directly toward supporting the project, from buying plants to paying volunteer costs. Please support the amazing volunteers and farmers who are giving their time, and Pledge a Hedge!

If you’d like to discuss a large or corporate donation please feel free to get in touch.

Thank you in advance for your contribution!
