Brianna's Miracle

Today started out good and ended not so good. Went to Brianna Laux's basketball game where she played really well. In the last quarter she went up to stop a shot and took an elbow to the left temple. She still kept playing till her breathing become labored. She couldn't catch her breath. As the game ended she told me that she thought she was just dehydrated. I told her to go in with her team, change and I would be waiting for her (knowing I was taking her in to rule out concussion). Two of her team mates came out to get me because Brianna was lying on the floor and throwing up. I needed to help her up and support her body weight to get her out to the lobby, reminding her how to walk each step of the way. Once in the lobby a coworker I used to work with, helped me balance her and stayed with her while I got my car. She began throwing up again and again and her color was really pale. At this point I knew I couldn't drive her myself, so I called for an ambulance. She threw up several times in the ambulance. We arrived at Helen Devos Children's Hospital and within minutes they decided to do a CT scan to rule out a brain bleed. Worst nightmare come true, she has a bleed in her 4th ventricle, and they need to place a drain to get the pressure down. In talking with the neurosurgeon, the concussion and brain bleed were not related to each other. The concussion was the reason that brought her in, but it helped to unveil the brain bleed. She is out of surgery and in the PICU now. She has a drain taking the fluid and blood off her brain. She will have another CT scan and MRI to determine what we are actually dealing with yet today. CT scan at 4am, MRI is not scheduled yet. But will most likely be this morning. She will be here a minimum of one week. Please keep Brianna in your thoughts and prayers as we look for answers.
