POLICE CHIEF T.J. BEHNING

On 9/25/17, Buffalo Iowa Police Chief, husband and father, T.J. Behning was involved in a motor vehicle pursuit, attempting to apprehend a wanted individual. The suspect stole an occupied garbage truck during the course of the pursuit and was traveling towards Chief Behning who was positioned outside his police vehicle, on the shoulder of the road deploying stop sticks. The suspect purposely drove the stolen garbage truck directly into Chief's patrol unit, in turn pushing the patrol vehicle into Chief, causing severe trauma to T.J.'s lower extremities. T.J. was airlifted to the University of Iowa hospitals where he will remain for the foreseeable future, undergoing several operations on his lower extremities in an attempt to salvage his right leg. T.J. and his family will endure a long but obtainable road of recovery, incurring significant medical expenses as well as travel expenses due to the hospital being located away from their home.
