Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) Modesto area chapter (which includes Merced, CA), mindful of COVID-19's exacerbation of food insecurity in our local community, and committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, seeks your donations in support of the Pop-Up People’s Pantry at the 18th Street People’s Garden in Merced, CA, currently run by one of our members, Erin Meyer, M.S.
Erin also heads up the University of California, Merced's sustainable food programs such as No Food Left Behind, amongst others. The Pop-Up People’s Pantry is also sponsored by the United Way of Merced.
Currently the Pop-Up People’s Pantry is unable to access a sufficient amount of quality food donations given the COVID situation. Your donation, now, will allow the Pop-Up People’s Pantry to purchase healthy plant-based food options for their weekly food distribution in Merced.
Your tax-deductible donation will also work to create more healthy food alternatives for those in need in the Central Valley. You will be donating to an organization that can immediately use your funds to purchase food for those in need and potentially grow in the following ways:
*The Pop-Up People's Pantry will be able to offer more healthy food, including non-perishables, to meet expected growing demand given existing food insecurity.
* The Pop-Up People’s Pantry will be offered on additional days each week.
Per the Project Drawdown 2020 report , reducing food waste and moving to a plant-based diet rank highest as actions we can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To safeguard a livable, healthy planet for our children and their children we need to, at a minimum, reduce emissions by 50% in the next 12 years.
CCL's carbon fee and dividend (currently we support the Energy Innovation and Dividends Act - H.R. 763) will effect a 40% reduction in 12 years. Given COVID, given climate change, given the need to move to a plant-based diet, and given the need to fight hunger, we invite you to join CCL Modesto in supporting the Pop-Up People’s Pantry/18th Street People’s Garden.
Thank you so much,
