I am the Executive Director and Secretary for the Port Jervis Transportation History Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is refurbishing and developing the original Erie Railroad turntable site in Port Jervis, New York as an interpretive historical exhibit and event space. We are acquiring and preserving numerous pieces of rail, canal, and road equipment that were once vital to this historic transportation hub. There are seven railcars currently on site, and 20 additional railcars will be arriving throughout early and mid-2022. These trains, in addition to being historic displays in their own right, will also be used to house our extensive displays of transportation exhibits and artifacts. Our collection also includes a boxcar equipped with a theater for indoor movie presentations and a flatcar that is being repurposed as a stage for concerts and other events.
All of our labor is performed by our 100% volunteer crew. Our $15,000 GoFundMe campaign aims to raise funding for the following supplies:
- 1,400 linear feet of custom-cut 3"x10" pressure treated lumber to replace the aging, structurally unsound wood decking on the operational 100-year-old Erie turntable to make it safe for our volunteers - $7,500
- Acquiring rail, ties, and other track material (OTM) to be reinstalled where six tracks once existed on the footprint of the original roundhouse (to provide additional railcar storage and workspace), plus constructing a panel track near the site entrance for an original Erie Railroad caboose that will serve as the ticket office - $3,500
- Materials for constructing platforms and access ramps allowing visitors entry into the train cars and displays - $1,500
- Materials to replace the chainlink fencing around the turntable with an aesthetically pleasing barrier - $2,500
