Tragic Fire Leaves 6 Children Without Their Home And Without Parents
Thank you to the City of Port Moody, Global News , Tri-City News , The Province, Vancouver Sun and CBC for their support.
On July 10th, the worst possible tragedy struck my family. In a domestic dispute, a fire started by my father burnt most of our house. My mother perished in the fire and my 5 siblings barely managed to escape with their lives. My father has been charged with second degree murder and arson. My 5 siblings and I are left without parents. All 6 of us are between the ages of 4 to 18.
We are seeking help to rebuild our house and our lives. We are currently without a home because our house is uninhabitable and unsalvageable. The home insurance company is likely to deny our claim because one of the policy holders (my father) is charged with arson. We have deep connection to our house and our neighbors, and we hope to rebuild the house.
It is estimated to cost at least $250,000 to repair the house. If it is deemed unrepairable because of the extensive water damage it will cost approximately $600,000 to rebuild the entire house.
We hope to raise enough funds to repair our house and anything extra will be placed into a trust for our future living and educational expenses. The support in which we have received from our friends, neighbors, relatives, and community has been a ray of light in the midst of confusion, darkness and despair. We are greatly appreciative of everything and we are very hopeful of the future.
We thank you in advance with the deepest gratitude from myself and my 5 siblings and in the loving memory of our mother. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Eldest Child of Six
We have a publication ban in place so we cannot reveal our names.
My name is Bryan Cheung. I am the maternal uncle to the children and I am representing them on this page since the children are under a publication ban. My permanent residence is in Florida but I am currently in Port Moody to assist the children. The funds raised from this campaign will go toward repairing the fire damage of the house and paying for their rent until the house is rebuilt. The eldest child has set up a tragedy account with RBC Royal Bank. The funds will be directly deposited into his account.
