Post-Flood Relief: Mary & Jerry

3 Mile Bridge Road has been home and place of business to Mary & Jerry Sklon for nearly 35 years. They have weathered two previous floods (that of 1992 and Hurricane Irene, 2011) in their home along the Winooski River in Middlesex, VT. But the third- this past week- has been the worst by far.

During last week’s storm, the river rose to completely submerge the basement/cellar/garage of Mary & Jerry’s home. This lower level was the base for their independent locksmith company of 41 years, Lockworks, which has serviced Waterbury to Barre and everywhere between, since 1982. The accumulating personal, material, and financial losses for their family and business are tremendous. The extent of damage to the home is still unknown, but electrical, heating, and water systems have all been deeply affected with probable need for complete replacement if they are to return home.

Mary & Jerry are cherished in their communities- this is obvious in the relationships and solidarity they share with their neighbors on 3 Mile Bridge Road and their care of others in these post-flood days. They have formed deep connections, lending hand and heart wherever needed. Mary is a 3x cancer survivor in recovery from its most recent recurrence along with other health concerns. Unhindered, Mary & Jerry continue to prioritize care for their mothers and others. But the emotional toll of this natural disaster is directly impacting their own and their family's health.

Now faced with many unknowns, we are turning to the community to ask for your hand in helping Mary and Jerry as they move forward.
