Power the Fight for Fair Redistricting

Dave’s Redistricting helps advocates and activists fight gerrymandering with our free web app, built entirely by volunteers. As site usage has ramped, our hosting and cloud computing costs have increased dramatically. We need to raise $25,000 to keep running through the current redistricting cycle.

As many of you know, districts are often drawn by politicians who prioritize personal and partisan interests - at the expense of the voters’ interests.  You frequently see oddly shaped districts designed to “pack” or “crack” voters. Or states whose voters are split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, but one party controls two-thirds of the legislature. Or states where only a very small percentage of congressional or legislative elections are competitive.

Advocates use DRA 2020, our free web-based application, to create, view, analyze, and share redistricting maps for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Advocates use maps created on DRA 2020 to testify before redistricting commissions and lobby their state legislators; they fight for fair districts. Dave's Redistricting is a team of volunteers with a shared passion for technology and democracy. We work with civic organizations and citizen activists who advocate for fair congressional and legislative districts and increased transparency in the redistricting process. 

Our team has been super busy in 2021. Over the last few months, we have delivered block level painting, 2020 census shapes, 2019 ACS data, community maps, landmarks, and an assortment of 2018 & 2020 election data. Together, we have more than 100 years of software development experience. Over the last 2-½ years, we have contributed more than 12,000 person-hours building and running DRA 2020.  Our entire team works for free because we believe our mission to be vital.

But, as we are known to say, "DRA is free to use, but not free to run."  Beyond the team’s contributions, we incur real hosting and cloud computing costs every day.  To date, we and a small group of supporters have borne these costs. As usage on DRA continues to increase, we anticipate that we will spend at least $25,000 through the current redistricting cycle to offer our service to the public.
