Powers running for Macmillan Nurses
Hi my name is Kieran (KP, Powers) and I’m running the Kew half Marathon to help MacMillan Cancer research who helped my parents in their final days. The picture is of my Mum Ann and Dad Jim who both unfortunately passed away from Spine cancer. Cancer of any form is cruel and relentless, but to have seen the people I admired most due to their energy and drive become chair and bed ridden in their last days was something that will stay with me forever. Spine cancer made life difficult for both my parents to be mobile due to the pain they were in. The help and support of the MacMillan nurses who came and gave specialist care for my parents was amazing. It was not only that expert care we needed for my parents, but the guidance and council they gave myself and my sister in such an emotional and stressful time which helped us have the strength to be there for our parents.
I also have been affected personally by Spine Cancer and had promised myself one day when fit and well I would do something for a fitting cause to help battle against such a terrible disease. So, without much thinking I decided to sign up to the Kew half Marathon (having not run anywhere further than 5km without stopping before) I’m now taking on 21.1km on Sunday 2nd April. I don’t intend to give Mo Farah a run for his money but I also don’t intend stopping until every step needed is done to cross the finish line. There may be tears, there will be chaffing, but what ever you can spare to help support the work of MacMillan Cancer research who were there for my family and have been for thousands others would be awesome. They continue to do great work to help in the battle against Cancer and what we can do to support them will be invaluable for other families like mine.
