Monument to Honor Vietnam POW/MIAs

THE CAMPAIGN
The Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund has launched a campaign to build a POW/MIA Monument on the south side of the Memorial to honor the  19 POW/MIAs originally listed on the Wall of Names and all prisoners of war and missing in action in SE Asia. A committee, chaired by PVVMF Board Member Pat Mitchell, hopes to raise $126,000 to construct the Monument near the Michael J. Crescenz statue installed last year to honor the only Philadelphian to receive the Medal of Honor for the Vietnam War.

PART OF THE VIETNAM STORY
The Fund Board has had the long-held vision of telling the story of the Vietnam War. With the recent Crescenz statue and the South Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag Monument, monuments important to our involvement in Vietnam have been added so that visitors will get a more complete picture of the war and better understand the sacrifices of the men who fought it.

OUR GOAL
The board thought it appropriate to honor all POW/MIAs because it was the last war in which large numbers of Americans were imprisoned or listed as missing. The fund-raising goal is $126,000, which it is hoped will also take care of some related work required at the Memorial.  The project timeline would have the Monument dedicated in 2019.

POW/MIA HISTORY
The Vietnam War raised awareness about POWs and MIAs from all wars as Americans focused on the the fate of United States servicemen who were reported as MIAs during that conflict.

A total of 2,583 POW/MIAs in 1975 were reportedly unaccounted for at the end of the Vietnam War, of which about 1,600 remain in that status. Of the latter figure, Pennsylvania has the fourth highest number of MIAs with 90, with 19 servicemen honored at the Memorial, the remains of which 10 are unaccounted for.  The other nine were identified starting in 1973, with the last in 2003.
