PPE Face Shields by Downey HS Robotics Team

Tax deductible
***05/06/2020***The Striking Vikings robotics team has been unstoppable.  1000's of shields.  Shields donated to hospitals, nursing homes, food service non-profits, front-line workers, etc. Just awesome kids doing awesome things.  We're so proud of them!***

***04/20/2020***The AMAZING students are set to have outputted 850 shields by tomorrow.  So great!  We are continuing the distribution and getting them into the hands of those that need them.  Thank you all for your generosity.  Special thanks to Linda Salomon Saldana (DFEO Executive Director) and Chris Tassos (Preferred Impressions) for their assistance in sourcing raw goods!

***04/15/2020*** The students were able to prep 100+ masks yesterday and could have done more but we are still awaiting some foam and tape.  Los Al Medical Center is picking up several today and checking out the school operation.  We were also able to donate several shields to HSA, which is a non-profit locally that home delivers food to local seniors, as well as provide a few to a CHOC nurse and PTA Helps.  We are expecting more tape and foam today to ramp us up to make a few thousand in the next week or so.  The students and the teacher, Mr. Yamasaki, have been fantastic!  And remember, this is their SPRING BREAK!  Thanks to all of you for your continued support.

***04/14/2020*** We delivered 150 sheets of acrylic and the elastic on Friday.  A graduate of Downey High School spent his weekend laser cutting the acrylic sheets.  The team is at the classroom today manufacturing and assembling shields.  We expect to have approximately 300 tomorrow.  We are attempting to source high density foam in bulk.  We will keep you all up to date as we progress.  The Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities thanks you again for all of your support.

***04/09/2020*** It has been an amazing response from our community and our Downey Unified alumni.  We are very appreciative of your support. Today we were able to use the funds from the past 24 hours to procure 150 sheets of acrylic, 2000 yds of elastic, and we are in the process of purchasing tape and foam.  We have enough material on the way to produce about 2500 shields starting as early as Monday, and we were able to use our alumni network to source materials at reduced costs.  In addition to the DHS Robotics Team, DFEO has also committed $750 to purchasing 3D printing filament for our Stauffer MS engineering teacher, who is using the 3D printers from Stauffer Middle School to print N95 masks via a program being coordinated with the USC School of Architecture.  Thank you again for all of the love.  We are hoping to increase this goal to put us in a position to produce 5,000 shields.  #DowneyStrong #OurKidsDeservetheBest #OurKidsAREtheBEST

The Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities (DFEO) is hosting a fundraiser to support the Downey High School Robotics Team and their project of manufacturing face shields for the Los Alamitos Medical Center, the PIH Health Downey Hospital, and the employees of Downey Unified School District who are distributing lunches to the students daily.

The Downey students and their teacher, Glenn Yamasaki, have set an initial goal of 1500 face shields, with approximately 100 per day coming off their assembly line.  Funds are needed to procure larger lots of supplies.

A testimonial from Frank Reyes, Downey Unified alumnus and Manager - Environment of Care of Los Alamitos Medical Center:

"Glenn... The prototype of your face shield is FANTASTIC!  The shield is much more robust than those we can purchase.  They will last staff longer periods of time.  Having the ability to replace the clear plastic is great!  Again, please thank the students!  All staff that I have shown the shields to are greatly appreciative and so very grateful of the students donating their time to ensure staff and patients are safe."

If we exceed our donation request, the students plan to continue production to complete a larger volume of shields and will begin sending finished shields to other hospital and medical center administrators who request them.

Any and all donations will help make an impact.  Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to those on the front line of fighting this disease.
