PPE for Interfaith Medical Center
Donation protected
I am raising money for Interfaith Medical Center and its affiliated hospitals to provide much need Personal Protection Equipment PPE.
Our healthcare workers are currently not properly equipped and protected to handle the the overload of patients in hospitals and clinics, currently and projected for the near future. Their exposure to the COVID-19 virus puts not only themselves but their loved ones, their co-workers and other patients at further risk.
As someone who lives in the neighborhood, I wanted to help in some small way. I was moved by the news that frontline workers don't have what they need to protect themselves from the virus and that Black people who are infected with Covid19 are twice as likely to die from this disease than Whites. That just blew my mind and I knew I needed to act. Interfaith Medical Center is just 5 blocks from my home in Crown Heights and a place that treats primarily Caribbean-Americans and African-Americans.
This week I donated 300 disposable booties along with surgical masks and KN95 masks (China's equivalent to N95) directly to Interfaith. I asked the Emergency Manager what more they needed and he said gowns. By then I had texted a dozen or so friends and neighbors to ask if they'd join the effort to fund PPE for what is our community teaching hospital. The financial donations began to come in right away - everyone really wanted to do something to help, so here I am. I started a larger effort here so those friends and neighbors and I can more easily reach out to our friends and neighbors and concerned others to help us raise the funds to support and protect those that are fighting to save lives.
Through that outreach, I got linked up with a larger network of independent fundraisers Project PPE to discuss short-, mid- and long-term plans and how to access bulk, discounted orders of surgical grade N95 masks at city and state level from a NIOSH CDC and FDA approved factory as well as face shields. They have vetted masks and other supplies that are ready to ship as they arrive at the warehouse each week. Grateful to them for the tips and contacts. We'll be coordinating with them to distribute supplies to Interfaith Medical Center, and for them to shift any donations in excess of its needs it other locations and hospitals in its network (Brookdale and Kingsbrook). The main focus, however, is Interfaith - the community teaching hospital for Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights and other Central Brooklyn communities.
100% of the money raised for PPE for Interfaith Medical Center will go towards the most needed PPE (Personal Protective Equipment, including but no limited to masks, gowns, goggles, shields, booties and disposable thermometers etc etc.). We will continue the campaign as long as it is still needed, but we will place orders every week, using the funds raised each week.
Thank you.
