My name is Amber Dexter and I am 47 years old. I have been a single mother my whole adult life and have two wonderful sons, ages 26 and 24. I have worked hard my whole life. I graduated from St. Catherine University with a B.A. in Secondary Education, a Minor in World HIstory, and Teacher Certification; all while raising two babies. I went on to teach full time for twenty years, sometimes working a seperate part-time job to make ends meet for my family. This past year, I have been working two jobs, substitute teaching and serving at a restaurant. As of last month, I was working 60+ hours a week. I have always been an example of "Doing what it takes", UNTIL LAST MONTH.
On February 20th, I suffered a stroke. The stroke left me without the use of my right hand and wrist. Every day simple tasks were a huge struggle, as you could imagine. Since the stroke, my life has consisted of Doctor, Neurologist, and Physical Therapy appointments, sometimes four a week. So far, I've had three MRI's, an ECG, and an EMG, with more tests to come. In addition, I will undergo testing for possible MS, because of the results of the MRI's.
I have been unable to work for the last month, and my future is uncertain. My Physical Therapist has concluded that currently my hand and wrist strength is up to about 30%, which is progress. However, she doesn't foresee me being able to work in the near future. With this news, plus the MS possibility, my ability to get back to work is in question.
Always being so independent, asking for financial help is a challenge for me. But at this time of need, I am hoping for your support. The reality for me is that I have had no income for over a month and my future is uncertain. I would use financial donations to pay my rent and bills so that I can stay in my home. I truly appreciate your time, prayers, and support.
