On July 3, 2018 our lives were forever changed when I received the call that my father, Jeff Gaines, had suffered from a hemorrhagic stroke while vacationing in Montana. The bleed was significant and occurred in the left side of his brain which has caused the right side of his body to not want to cooperate. Dad is right handed and is having to relearn everything. He is growing stronger everyday and his spirit is strong but his memory, comprehension and ability to control his body comes and goes. He was transferred out of the ICU into the Neuro Unit today which is a blessing; however, the real challenge is just beginning. A stroke at home is devastating enough but to have a loved one suffer from a stroke while being 3/4 the way across the country has been more challenging than I could have ever imagined. We are still working to get him medically cleared to be able to be transported back to North Carolina for continued care which includes hospitalization, if still necessary, inpatient rehabilitation treatment and outpatient rehabilitation. Unfortunately his insurance does not cover all of his medical expenses and will not pay to transport him back home, so we are still trying to determine the safest way to get him home once his team of doctors will allow him to be transported. As you all know hurricane season is right around the corner and due to the severity of the stroke we are uncertain as to when he will be able to go back to work. Many of you have asked and offered to send funds to assist with these expenses and I thought this would be the best way to allow you to contribute if you would like. Please do not feel any pressure to contribute. Your comments, texts, messages, thoughts and prayers mean the world to his family and to him and we cannot thank you enough. If you choose to contribute thank you for that too! It means more than you will ever know! God has been watching over dad this whole time and I have seen blessings everywhere. Having all of you in our lives is the greatest blessing of all! You never really know the love and support someone has until something like this happens! God bless all of you and please keep dad and our family in your thoughts and prayers!
