On December 25th my brother went to the ER because he wasn’t feeling well, had a fever and lots of pain from what he thought might be an abscess from an ingrown hair or cut. He was told there was nothing to drain and sent home with antibiotics. A day an a half later his scrotum became so swollen he could barely walk, he started draining fluid. We brought him to the Uconn where we had no idea the news we were about to get. On December 27 th he was rushed in for emergency surgery because he had gangrene and it was taking over his body. We were told he would need to keep the breathing tube in overnight because they anticipated he would need another surgery the following day. When the doctors came out we were informed it was much worse than they had realized we were told now that Sat the breathing tube wouldn't come out and more than likely it would on Tuesday. The days were so hard not being able to talk to him and see him this way. Those days turned into more days. He had to stay with the breathing tube and sedated for 14 days and had 5 surgeries in that time frame. The damage the gangrene was so bad it left him with an exposed testicle and a wound so big it was over 18 inches long. He fought so hard even while sedated. We were told by the doctor that they gave Steven and 85% chance of dying when he came in . Due to where his surgery site was located they had to take him for surgery to do an ostomy bag(colostomy bag), the surgeon came out and said they were not able to do the simple surgery and had to cut him wide open to do this. Over the next week his body wasn't handling the new ostomy bag and had to have several tests done because he was throwing up all the bile. Once they got that under control on January 23rd hw was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital for Special Care Unit. He had his wound care taken care of while there and was discharged to home with homecare. He cannot leave unless for doctor appointments. We are helping in changing his wound dressings 5 days a week and homecare helps 2 days a week. He will require a minimum of 2 more surgeries. His wound will not be able to heal on it's own and will require plastic surgery. We are hoping his ostomy will be reversed as long as his body can function once he is healed. The medical bills are staking up. He isn't able to work. He will be going back and forth to different doctors and specialists It's been a battle to get his medications covered since he's been home. We are asking for any help you can give during this rough time. He is going to be out of work for a long time. Please even sharing this helps. We waited to do this because we honestly don't like asking for help and thought we could do this on our own. As medical bills keep stacking it's becoming more stressful. His wife Sarajane has be by his side and so supportive. I would love to take some of the stress off the both of them . We want to thank everyone who has help support out family through this time without you we don't know where we would be.
