Help Amber recover from a brutal dog attack

A dog attacked our dear friend, Amber, and her mom, Helen, on May 27, 2023. Amber is currently in the ICU and needs our support and prayers. Amber has always loved animals and has been a part of Hawaiʻi Animal Kuleana Alliance's volunteer ʻohana since 2018. Amber is a devoted animal caregiver who selflessly gives her time and energy to animals in need. Please donate and share.

We spoke to Helen, Amber's mom, to get her permission to create this fundraiser. She will be the named beneficiary.

Here is the story as told by Amber's friend, Batina Grossett.

I just got done visiting Amber Clausen in the ICU at Hilo medical center. She is in so much pain it's difficult to sit with her

She was attacked by a dog by her front gate at her house yesterday. The dog did not bite the dog Amber had on a leash...it went for HER! It was a good 15min this dog was attacking before anyone answered her screams for help. A good citizen and neighbor helped get the dog off and put her in the bed of his pickup and drove her to the Pahoa fire station. She lost so much blood she almost needed a transfusion. Her hair and t-shirt were soaked in blood. Her mom said her daughter's life flashed before her eyes honestly, it's a miracle she is alive. The man that rescued her told her to lay on her belly so the dog couldn't get her vital organs, which I believed saved her life!

This is the THIRD ATTACK from this dog! The first attack caused nerve damage in her hand. All incidents have been reported to the police, and the owners have been cited in the past, still nothing was done to prevent this dog from getting out of his yard (not fully fenced) and attacking...it was reported that they let the dog out and left the house for the weekend.

She needed emergency surgery on her left arm, they did their best to save it; the bites were down to the bone ... pieces of Amber's arm are still in her yard there is a risk that it can swell and cut off the circulation in her arm and they will have to find other solutions to help her arm, cutting to relieve the pressure (more surgery) or even amputation if it get worse

Her left arm was dislocated and also bit up. Both arms are immobilized in bandaging and she can just wiggle her fingers, which is a great sign, but it's too early to tell. She says she really doesn't have much feeling in her arms, other than pain.

The nurse said they will evaluate her tomorrow and decide whether she stays in the ICU or goes to the pediatric ICU which is where they send the intermediate patients after this kind of intense surgery.

It's so sad that this incident could entirely be prevented! The police knew, there were prior documented the police arrested the owner (presumably for an outstanding felony warrant) and the dog was taken and euthanized.
