Precious Plastic - Educating children, Bridport.

We have all heard it, ‘More than plastic than fish in the sea by 2050.’ Threat or fact? I for one, do not want to find out. This is a prediction based on the current climate and if things do not change, if we do not make the change then this is what we are facing, 28 years from now. The impact this will have on our oceans, landscape, marine animals, sea birds, coral reefs, tourism, transport and the fishing industry. This is especially relevant in the area we live and will have a huge impact on our community.

I could bombard you with facts and statistics, but we all know the score realistically. This is a crisis, and our responsibility is to turn this around. We cannot afford to ignore this any longer.

What better way than to educate and inspire today's young people to stand up, use the power in their voices, and make change. In order to inspire change, we must first educate and create understanding. Local businesses and members of our community really should want to be behind this and be a part of this initiative, to be able to proudly say we are doing what we can, we are a part of this, we are teaching the future generations to live differently. This needs to happen NOW.

I have written and self-published a children’s book ‘Precious Plastic’ with this aim in mind. The story is a heart-warming story that young readers will engage with, it educates on the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and encourages them to make the changes to protect our planet, encouraging our children and future generations to be change–makers. I have always been passionate about our oceans and planet and I knew i wanted to do more, to deliver this message to all young people with out them having to buy a copy of the book. For it to be embedded in their education. In order to educate and inspire, we must first create understanding - understanding of the cause and effect.

In collaboration with Symondsbury Primary School, who have just achieved 'Plastic free Status' from Surfers Against Sewage, and who have also just completed 100 ways to change the world, we are launching an initiative to raise awareness and create lasting change in EVERY single primary school, starting in Bridport, Dorset and the South. Symondsbury has the same drive and desire to create a ripple effect and encourage other schools to do the same. To encourage children to stand up, use their voices and be heard.

Summary of our goal: To be able to raise enough to put copies of my book, including lesson plans and supporting resources into all classrooms in all primary schools around the country, starting with the South. To be able to offer fun, engaging and vital educational workshops in schools, teaching a new way of life to those generations, with a focus on topics such as Single-Use Plastic, for FREE. These workshops would be informative and creative. These would be available to ALL ages. Supporting the arts, literacy and tackling the issues we are facing. The topics we raise and address could range from climate change/ocean pollution to poverty and water aid.  As well as this we want at least 100 schools to sign up and commit to doing 100 things to change the world - this was the children's vision. In the packs we will provide ideas, support and resources to enable this.

This is an inspirational initiative - the more people who are on board the more it can grow, and the greater the impact we can have. Many schools are unable to implement workshops and learning like this due to time, planning and budget constraints. By providing this at no cost we will remove those pressures and enable every school to be a part.

Please pledge what you can. Every penny will help to spread the word to these children; you will be doing your bit for our planet. I aim to begin implementing this in schools asap. Money raised will fund the costs of printing/publishing, quality resources and professional lesson planning and workshop costs.

Any businesses that contribute/sponsor will be recognised and can choose to appear on resources printed. Along with knowing they are doing the right thing, supporting a vital cause and playing their part in changing the world. The packs would be produced in collaboration with a Symondsbury School and would be launched at an event 'WE Day' they are hosting in June, with a focus on inspiring young people to be the change and to inspire others. Businesses and sponsors would be most welcome to come along. Any members of the public who donate to the cause will receive a free copy of the children's book Precious Plastic. Time is of the essence so we can get printing in time for the launch!

We really appreciate any help you can provide. Any questions businesses/public can please email [email redacted]
