’The Island’ is a new 70 minute stage play (no interval) inspired by ongoing historic revelations of abuse from some of Ireland’s most prestigious rugby schools. This entailed a combination of over two years research of interviews & private rehearsed script reads with survivors present.
Set in 2022. Four successful South Dublin school friends, now in their mid 50's, gather around a kitchen ISLAND to celebrate a win 42 years later over a rival elite school and to piece together news of the death of an estranged school pal 'Gonzo' his rise and his demise, which brings all of them back to their school days and one by one to unearth hidden dark truths they have never shared with each other until this night.
'The Island' premiered at The New Theatre Temple Bar, Dublin 2, on 28 May 2024 - 01 June 2024 and continued its SOLD OUT run to The Mill Theatre, Dundrum,June 2024 - 21 June 2024. Our next run is at Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, 25 June 2024 - 27 June 2024.
Cast: Owen O'Gorman, Conor Donelan, Pádraig Murray, Laurence Lowry, Ruairi Nicholl.
Originally DIRECTED by Seamus Moran.
As we have not received any arts funding whatsoever for this premiere production run, we are dependent on private donations and advanced ticket sales revenue. We need donations to keep coming in big or small, to assist us with up front expenses for our Rehearsal & performance costs for cast & crew, hire fees, set transport/build, travel, printing, marketing, advertising etc & future runs.
Reviews
'A superb ensemble of Donelan, Lowry, Murray and O'Gorman highlighting the powerplays, the frailties, bravado and genuine courage of boys playing at being men....Which is not to say The Island is a perfect play, just that's often rather brilliant... An unflinching interrogation of male sexual abuse in a Dublin rugby school whose horrors were silenced by shame'. Chris O'Rourke The Arts Review
‘Noonan’s play, I believe, is a work of such importance for Ireland, a work of drama so powerfully close to the bone .... The language is raw, the subject matter substantial, but all of it I think, is necessary’.
