Preserve & Conserve Stamford's Artifacts
With your donation, you will contribute to preserving and conserving historic artifacts in the Stamford History Center’s collection areas. The many treasures we preserve can be at risk from damage and decay due to environmental conditions.
Museum collections including textiles, paintings, documents and photos, furniture and more can be damaged most by heat, dust, light, and humidity. Your donation will give SHC the opportunity to purchase dehumidifiers, room air conditioning, ultraviolet light film, and air purification systems for our galleries, document and photo archives, artifact, furniture and textiles collection storage areas. According to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, ideal humidity levels for textiles, paintings, paper, and furniture are between 45 and 55% and a temperature range of 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Having this in place is a challenge.
Our budget and contributions from the community were impacted by Covid in the last year and a half, as has been the case with many other non-profit community historical societies. We were unable to host our Annual Gala and other events that provide funding to pay for many of the infrastructure supplies and equipment needed. The need to provide an archivally correct storage environment has not changed despite the impact of the pandemic. 18th century documents, silk stockings, portraits, clocks and cast iron stoves all need proper care, which requires money in the bank, at a time when it is sparse.
Join us in our mission to keep our museum of historic holdings that tell the stories of Stamford's past well maintained, for future generations to enjoy them and learn about our city’s past.
