Preserve Pullman's Legacy: Help Greenstone Church

The Historic Pullman Foundation is asking for your help on behalf of the Greenstone Church, a cornerstone of Pullman National Historical Park and a vital piece of Chicago’s architectural and cultural heritage. The church is in urgent need of preservation. Utilities were shut off due to over $10,000 in unpaid bills, putting the church’s survival at risk. Like many churches in America, the Greenstone faces financial challenges as the congregation dwindles. This GoFundMe campaign will restore vital utilities and repair the heating system before further damage occurs.

The church is already facing severe threats due to the lack of climate control. Without immediate intervention, the historic organ and intricately carved wood panels could suffer irreversible damage. The church’s iconic bell tower, along with other architectural features, continues to be exposed to the elements, and without proper care, these historic treasures could be lost forever.

Built in 1882, the Greenstone Church was originally intended to serve as an interdenominational place of worship for the residents of Pullman, a pioneering company town. The church was later sold to the Methodist Church in 1906, who owns and operates it today.

Despite its designation as a National Historic Landmark, the Greenstone Church has faced significant challenges in securing the funding needed for its preservation, leaving the building’s future uncertain. With inflation driving up the cost of repairs, the community’s ability to act remains constrained.
