Preserve Tansy Point Treaty Grounds
The Chinook Indian Nation is purchasing our historically significant 1851 Treaty Grounds. The location was the home to one of our many Clatsop villages. Today it is the home to elk, deer, beaver, otter and many other culturally important animal, bird and plant species. It is also the home to a damaged watershed (Tansy Creek) that we hope to restore.
Tansy Point is the only place in our known history where every member of our 5 tribes were present at one time. In August of 1851 every infant, child, man, woman and elder was present to witness and understand the seriousness of the Anson Dart treaty negotiations. This fact alone makes the location sacred and priceless to our community.
The undeveloped acreage is being offered exclusively to the Tribe, at a rate significantly below market value, by the family who has been its caretakers for the better part of a century. Our goal is interpreting the historical significance of the site, protecting it from development and revitalizing the Tansy Creek watershed. We are currently purchasing additional small lots within the water shed with our tribal funds.
Despite Chinook's prominence in the history of the pacific northwest, and our participation in two sets of treaty negotiations, our status with the federal government is unclear. We do not have a reservation and our inherited rights are often not acknowledged. Since 1899 we have been fighting to preserve these rights and clarify our status with the federal government.
We need your help to make this purchase a reality. Once in our possession we will work with neighboring land holders with the hope of expanding the footprint of this land to include the adjacent shoreline and as much of the Tansy Creek watershed as possible.
Please help. Your generosity is appreciated and will be remembered within the community and amongst our descendants forever.
hayu masi (many thanks),
The Cathlamet, Clatsop, Lower Chinook, Wahkiakum and Willapa people of the Chinook Indian Nation
