Preserve Sheffield Island Lighthouse
The Seaport Association, a non-profit 501-c3 organization was started in 1978 by a group of volunteers that work tirelessly to maintain the historic maritime treasure of Connecticut, Sheffield Island Lighthouse, on the National Register of Historic Places. Due to COVID-19, we desperately need funds to offset the loss of income due to our inability to implement our key fundraisers making your donation more important than ever. With your donation we will continue to preserve and maintain Sheffield Island Lighthouse and to enlighten lives with the stories of our shared maritime cultural heritage, now and for generations to come.
COVID-19 has dramatically impacted all our fundraising programs from our Gala Dinner, Golf Tournament, and Sheffield Island Family Events to our Clam Bakes and BBQ dinners on Sheffield Island. For the first time in 42 years we had to cancel the beloved Norwalk Oyster Festival, our major fundraising event of the year. To date, our cruise schedule is in limbo and dependent on State regulations. We desperately need funds to offset the loss of income from our inability to implement our key fundraisers due to COVID-19, making your donation more important than ever.
The Seaport Association has taken thousands of local children, as part of our educational program on a cruise to Sheffield Island for free because of our fundraising efforts and generous donations. It is so rewarding to watch them explore every nook and cranny of the Lighthouse, learn about our maritime heritage, explore the adjoining 35-acre Wildlife Refuge, and play on the beach. This experience teaches children about the past and encourages them to appreciate our shared cultural heritage.
Year after year, our volunteers have helped the Association to organize the fundraising events that have enabled us to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in improving the amenities and infrastructure of Sheffield Island. Last year we built a new wooden pavilion in order to accommodate our guests in comfort and to serve as a classroom for visiting students. We also installed a “new” antique telescope to enhance the visitor experience. The view of the Connecticut shoreline to the Manhattan skyline from the island is spectacular.
As we adjust to the new normal we want to stay positive and not lose the momentum we have so diligently strived to achieve. We need your help and are asking you to send donate today to the Sheffield Island Lighthouse Fund.
