Preserving a Detroit Historical Landmark
For many years St. Stephen A.M.E. Church/Spivey Community Center served as the mecca of the
Westside of Detroit. The center opened March 9, 1956. It was accessible six days a week for activities
and over 500 young people participated weekly.
These young people hailed from all over the Detroit
area including Highland Park, Ecorse, River Rouge and Inkster. Some of the activities were worship
service, roller skating, scouts, dance, talent shows, birthday parties, exercise classes, basketball,
baseball, town halls, receptions, health fairs, tutoring, Summer Bible School, banquets, movies, teas,
fashion shows, bazaars, Head Start and more.
In the Spivey Community Center is a high school size gymnasium. Oh, if this floor could talk! It’s the
same floor where the Supremes, the Miracles, Temptations and other Motown Legends rehearsed and
met Berry Gordy Jr. This is the floor where thousands of teenagers learned to roller skate.
Unfortunately, this historic gymnasium floor was heavily damaged during the recent rainstorms in
Detroit. In order to preserve this Detroit Historical Landmark for future generations to use, we are
asking for you to open your hearts monetarily.
We have set up a GoFundMe page and other means to contribute to this effort. Thank you in advance with blessings
