We are Dr. Araceli Valverde, (Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, and President of the ECUSA_Midwest Chapter) and HORUS XV team.

- ECUSA (Association of Spanish Scientists in the United States) is a non-profit organization composed mainly of Spanish professionals in science and technology. It was created in 2014 and run exclusively by volunteers (1500 active members across their 6 chapters (Boston, Washington DC, New York, California, Midwest, and Texas). Our main goals are to promote science & technology, build a network for scientists in the USA, and promote science diplomacy. Please check our webpage for further details on ECUSA’s mission and vision (https://www.linkedin.com/company/comunidadecusa/).

- HORUS XV team:

Thea Bouteille (Captain), Miguel Ganuza (Programmer) and Pablo Santamaría (Communication) are the members of HORUS XV that will come to the event.
HORUS XV is a group of 6 students of 4rd year ESO students from IES Diego de Velázquez (Torrelodones, Madrid) who have created a CANSAT, a minisatellite the size of a soda can (33 cm).
Of the 300 reports sent to the ESA (European Space Agency), 100 projects were launched in ‘brunete’ and HORUS XV was selected for the final phase among the 16 best, with HORUS XV being the youngest team to achieve this.
The project consists of two missions. The primary mission is common to all teams and consists of measuring atmospheric temperature and pressure. The secondary mission is freely chosen by each team and the HORUS XV team proposed creating 3D maps of the terrain where CANSAT will fall and analyzing which geographic areas are most vulnerable to flooding.
Climate change is affecting water bodies, therefore, CANSAT could protect fauna and terrestrial life. On its way to becoming one of the most innovative projects, the next step is to take lichens on CANSAT, to study how space conditions affect these organisms.

“I Noche Blanca De La Ciencia”
I am excited to share that this year, ECUSA Midwest and their co-partnerships: Cervantes Institute of Chicago, Spanish Professionals in Chicago (PEC), and Women in Bio_Chicago (WIB) are planning to organize an amazing research event: “I Noche Blanca de La Ciencia” that will be hosted by the Cervantes Institute in November 15-16th. This research event will be aimed at motivating Spanish children and Hispanic-speaking children between 6-12 years old to learn about science, engage with scientists from different backgrounds, and enjoy and learn in a fun-filled atmosphere. There will be lectures from scientists with diverse backgrounds, booths showcasing basic science research, and fantastic awards for the children.

ECUSA_Midwest colabora con el patrocinio y difusión del Proyecto HORUS XV, que será presentado los días 15-16 de noviembre durante el evento:
