Help Print Issue 4 of our Lit Mag "Be the Rainbow"

Hello, we are students at Bronx Arena High School  and we are working on publishing a literary magazine in order to showcase our peers’ amazing talents throughout the rest of our school and to anyone who's interested.

Our school has worked hard to be there for our students emotionally by having advocate counselors in each arena (classroom). We are very understanding of how our generation of students struggle in our society and deal with mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. Most of our students like to write, sing, draw or express their feelings in many different ways, and we'd like to give them a bigger and better platform in order to be able to achieve that.

We are hoping to raise enough money to publish enough good quality magazines to spread awareness and represent our talents. Our first two lit mags were not a “big hit” because of the poor quality printing options we had. Last year, we printed the lit mag digitally and we were able to purchase just a handful of professionally printed copies.

This year, we'd like to raise at least around $960, which is an estimate based on last year's printing cost. This would make about 70 professionally printed copies, which is enough to give to half of the staff, all five arenas, every student in our lit mag course, and 30 for people who aren't in the class and submitted pieces.

If we wanted to make enough copies to give all staff and students and each arena a copy and 2 for display in our school, we'd need 117 copies, which would be around $1522.

Any extra funds beyond our goal will go toward printing additional issues, hosting events to publicize the magazine, or next year's issue.

In our lit mag course this year, we have an amazing team that works very well together and communicates well. As shown in the video, each of us has a job title and a role to play in the course, such as Branding Designer, Layout Designer, Art Editor, Managing Editor, Webmaster, Publicist, Event Planner, Chief Morale Officer, Fundraising Coordinator, and Staffer.

An example of the type of writing that's going to be included is a project written by a student in one of our courses. It is a reinvention of the song “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, which is a very popular song made in the 2000s. This student rewrote lyrics to make it fit a feminist gender point of view, as well as show equality and fix certain lines where it sounded more like wrongful stereotypes of all genders.

A note from Molly, Lit Mag advisor and ELA teacher at Bronx Arena: During yet another challenging school year disrupted by continued impacts of the pandemic, the students in my Lit Mag class put together this crowdfunding campaign largely independently (including continuing to work on it while I was out of school with covid for a week!). I am so proud of their hard work, as well as the meaningful artwork and writing their peers have bravely shared for publication. I truly appreciate your support in rewarding those efforts with a beautiful, professionally printed fourth issue of "Be the Rainbow."
