Priscilla’s Medical Expenses
I'm Julia NeSmith, and I am fundraising for Medical Assistance for my beautiful grand daughter, Priscilla.
She has received second and very deep third degree burns over 70% of her body from an accident while staying the night at a friend's house on Sunday June 13, 2021.
Priscilla had her first of many more surgeries on June 15, 2021. The doctors removed 3rd degree burns from her lower half of her body, and took a biopsy of her skin to send off to another state to grow new skin. The treatment of growing new skin is called Cultured Epidermal Autografts. This is very expensive treatment and is not generally covered very well by health insurance. Burn care is one of the costliest areas of health care with long hospital stays, multiple surgeries (4 completed to date and 1 more this week, with many more to come to replace skin), and expensive equipment requirement's. Priscilla is expected to be in the ICU unit for the next several months. She will have many more surgeries after this for reconstruction. Priscilla comes from a blended family, and all four parents discussed this treatment and decided they wanted to try to give Priscilla the best chance for recovery to look “normal”, and not have her body reject the donor skin because she is so young at only 11 years old.
With this unexpected incident, Priscilla’s mother and father are having to take time off from work due to Priscilla being in critical condition. They are also dealing with the extra expenses such as gas being used that is not in the normal budget, extra days at daycare for the other children, hospital food, and other costs associated with remaining close to Priscilla on a daily basis. The medical cost associated with hospital care, primary care in ICU burn unit, drugs, curing materials, and emergencies. Eventually they will also deal with transporting her to Galveston, TX for reconstruction surgeries. She will also have to have many surgeries while going through puberty and her skin needs to stretch. Along with occupational therapy, physical therapy, mental health therapy and much more that we can't even determine right now. We want to raise funds so they can give Priscilla the best support for healing.
We are appreciative of any and all donations for her cause. She is just a child, and a sister to eight siblings. We love her very much and only pray for her healing and comfort from the pain.
The funds will make an immediate impact for this family. We thank you all and appreciate the donations regardless of the size, as every bit will make a difference for this deserving child. May God look out for our grand daughter Priscilla.
**Update: It is now June 21, 2021 and tomorrow Priscilla will have her fourth surgery.
***Incident: Long story short, Her and her friend was pretending to have a campfire in her friend's backyard. They put rocks in a circle, and had all kinds of random food, trying to cook food. Unfortunately, they were using rubbing alcohol to start a fire. Priscilla was holding it, and rubbing alcohol burns practically clear. Therefore, the flame followed the rubbing alcohol back into the container, and Priscilla closed the squirt top lid. That is when the rubbing alcohol bottle blew up in Priscilla's hands at the seam of the bottle. This was not a social media influenced incident. This was just two girls doing what they always did. Trying to see what they could mix together, and play pretend. I've always warned Priscilla that not everything can be mixed together when she is experimenting and to always ask me first. But she did not do that in this case. Investigator's had interviewed everyone, investigated the scene and cell phones, and has ruled this a home accident.
Since June 13, 2021 Priscilla has had 17 surgeries now, and 10 blood transfusions in two different hospitals in two different states. There is a Facebook group called “Priscilla Fowler’s Recovery” that has more up to date information on Priscilla, and also burn awareness and fire prevention.
Both families are now dealing with divorces, and Priscilla’s dad (Mike) and mom (Danielle) are trying to put a home together for the children. This fundraiser will also help with Priscilla’s medical needs, and travel back and worth to Galveston, TX for medical care, travel to her local appointments, getting a home together for Priscilla to live in, things outside of the normal budget when dealing with medical needs and getting life back on track from being on hold since June 2021. This fundraiser will now support five children and two adults during Priscilla’s time of need. Thank you for all your continued help. Priscilla’s mother can not return back to work yet due to Priscilla’s daily needs. And since Priscilla’s parents are co-parenting in the same household now, Priscilla’s mother will not be able to have help such as food stamps and disability benefits for Priscilla’s disability. So all help isappreciated.
