Hello!

I am Georgina Gonzalez, an aspiring film director from London currently based in New York City. I'm about to shoot my first short film, set in Harlem, telling the story of one young woman’s frustration and anger at the loss of community around her. At seeing her best friend pushed out of their home due to rent rises, she devises a strategy to get revenge on the landlord and get her friend back, which leads to unintended consequences.

The film aims to reflect the reality for many Harlem natives, and speak to the feelings of countless other people in gentrified neighborhoods. I myself have only had the privilege of living in Harlem for a few years, and in that short time have seen it change hugely. Back home in London, places like Brixton and Peckham face similar challenges and risk having their unique and unapologetically Black neighborhoods destroyed. Both Brixton and Harlem hold very dear places in my heart.

The film is a blend of comedy, drama and revenge. It's focused on the personal impacts of displacement/gentrification for my generation, with a vivid and sweet friendship at the heart of the film between childhood friends who are losing their shared connection as neighbors.
We'll submit to festivals once it's complete.

Why this matters
This story resonates with many people in many cities across the globe, finding that the financialization of the housing market means they're being priced out of their own neighborhoods. It is about an underrepresented voice, and will be made by a director, cast and crew from under-represented groups in the film industry.
The cast and crew are all young aspiring creatives, working on this project for no or low pay to create
together a powerful story. I am so grateful to everyone who has contributed so far, with their advice, willingness to get involved in filming, offering locations and giving encouragement.

Why Your Contribution Matters
Your contribution isn't just about completing a film. It's about amplifying an important issue.
Your support will go towards hiring camera and audio equipment, and specialist skills for post production as well as food and transport for the cast and crew.
Please contribute now and be part of this adventure!
