Project Baby for Manny & Emily Toribio
Donation protected
The Toribio family has been incredibly blessed by the miracles of modern medicine. A three-year IVF journey that resulted in three embryos, one giving us our beautiful daughter Elena! She has been such a joy, and our hearts are so full!
However, we do have two embryos left, and a promise of possible siblings. We feel that we have to do our due diligence by these potential babies, and will need to turn to surrogacy for the remaining two.
While Emily desperately wishes she could add to the family, delivery with Elena did not go as planned. After a difficult pregnancy that resulted in preeclampsia and HELPP, Elena needed to be delivered early at 36 weeks. Going into the OR with the promise of meeting our baby, quickly turned emergent after Elena was delivered. Emily started hemorrhaging, and nearly had to have an emergency hysterectomy. After several blood transfusions and a stay in the ICU, we are very lucky to be together as a family today.
With the condition of Emily's uterus, and the severe complications she endured, doctors do not recommend that she carry any more children. Quite simply, it could result in loss of life, whether hers or any future children.
If we've learned anything through this process, it's that making a family is not in accordance with our plan or timeline. And most recently, we've had the very fortunate experience of being connected with a potential surrogate, who is ready to help us in this next step.
This wonderful news has come much more quickly than we anticipated, and all savings we had, have gone towards IVF and Emily and Elena's medical bills. This is why we turn to our friends, family, and network with this request. It takes a village to raise a child. We humbly ask for your timely assistance. The opportunity for a gift of surrogacy doesn't come along everyday. We feel that this plan has been placed before us to care for our remaining embryos.
Whether direct financial support, recommending a resource, or suggestions and love for our journey ahead - we sincerely appreciate any and all gifts! Funds will be used exclusively towards continuing to grow our family...a goal that means more to us than we can put into words. We are grateful to you for simply reading our story, and ask for your prayers and support as we continue this process!
The lofty goal of $5, 000 is a fifth of a surrogate's carrying fees. To put this in perspective, it does not include legal, IVF, or insurance costs - the entire process can easily total up to $75,000 (approximately $40, 000 of which we need to have liquid in the next few months). We are seeking out financing and will continue to be as savvy as we possibly can through this process. Please know that if we happen to have any funds leftover, our plan is to donate to RESOLVE Infertility Association to help another loving couple realize their dreams of a family!
Why IVF?
Emily was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure at the age of 16, an unexplained condition that occurs in about 1% of women. She has a long-standing relationship with Mid-Iowa Fertility and has known that IVF would be an option for her, if she chose that route.
Infertility is an incredibly emotional and expensive diagnosis. We exhausted all options, from foster to adoption, before continuing with IVF. For us, it was the least emotional process - working with the prescriptive medical field. Not to mention that an egg donor was needed, and Emily dreamed of at least carrying a baby - an emotional attachment that means the world to her.
It was also the most financially savvy choice. With the relationship she had with Mid-Iowa, a health plan that provided for some liquid assets, and a generous loan - we were best able to cover expenses that were deemed medical.
Whatever path a couple selects for adding a family, we support! A child is such an incredible blessing. With the information and relationships we had, IVF was simply the right choice for our family.
