Hello, my name is Cortney Weber and I have students at Discovery Elementary and Williamsburg Middle School in Arlington Public Schools. After Dr. Duran announced that we will be returning to school virtually in the fall, I was trying to find a way to ensure that all students in Arlington are equipped with the supplies that they need to be successful in a virtual environment. I know that there are currently many school supply drives circulating in Arlington for APS students, but I wanted to focus on items specific to at-home virtual learning. After crowdsourcing teachers, parents and APS staff, it became immediately apparent that headphones are essential. A majority of families in the county have multiple APS students in the same living space, and for this reason, teachers felt that headphones would help with keeping a student’s attention and allow them to engage on a more personal level, without distractions.
However, headphones are by far the most expensive items on school supply lists (other than graphing calculators) for all grades throughout the county. Many at-risk families will not be able to provide quality headphones for their children, so I wanted to help.
The goal of Project Headphones is to ensure that all APS students have headphones for the 20-21 school year. The headphones will be compatible with school issued iPads and/or Mac Books, will include a microphone and will be distributed by APS.
I am also proud to announce that Project Headphones has officially partnered with Arlington Public Schools to help provide all students with headphones. We have stablished a grant with APS. I received many questions about corporate donations, but Project Headphones is not a 501c3. With the establishment of this grant, it will allow companies to donate directly to APS, to be used specifically for Project Headphones. If your company would like to donate, please contact Cortney Weber using the GoFundMe Contact button below.
The need for headphones is real. Parents and teachers all agree that headphones with mics are essential for productive and focused online learning. In Arlington County alone, 10k students do not have their basic food needs met. We would need to raise $100k to provide headphones to all those students. I'm up for the challenge, are you?? Let's do this!
