Project (im)possible 7
In November 2022, local legend and trail running athlete Piotr Babis will attempt to complete Project (im)possible 7!
Project (im)possible 7 is the most ambitious trail running project ever attempted in Tasmania. It will see Piotr running 7 of Tasmania's most challenging multi-day bushwalking tracks within 7 days. Piotr is inspired to use this endeavor to raise much-needed funds for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania in gratitude for the organisation that keeps him and others safe whilst enjoying Tasmania's outdoors. Project (im)possible 7 will be Piotr's ultimate challenge which he hopes will simultaneously inspire and empower the Tasmanian community to get outside and explore their amazing backyard.
About the project:
Tasmania's trails are well-known for their difficulty. Most tracks are exposed to harsh weather conditions, roots, sharp rocks and deep mud! Project (im)possible 7 will cover an accumulated distance of 380km and nearly 20,000m of elevation gain in 7 days!
Piotr's ambitious trail running itinerary is below:
1. Southcoast Track (85km, 4000m +/-)
A 6-8 day hike that starts with a plane flight from Hobart to Melaleuca to access the trail that provides a sneak preview of the landscape and rugged coastlines and river inlets from above prior to commencing.
2. Federation Peak (43km, 2500 +/-)
A remote peak in Tasmania's Eastern Arthur Range. Declared by Sir Edmund Hillary as 'Australia's only real mountain', this track is known for its exposed ridge and notorious muddy approach.
3. Western Arthurs Approach (45km, 3500 +/-)
This beautiful range contains 22 peaks and 20 hanging lakes. The lollipop loop is regarded as Tasmania's greatest walk by many experienced bushwalkers. It is undoubtedly spectacular but is also one of the most dangerous walks in Tasmania.
4. Frenchmans Cap (45km, 2800m +/-)
This walk is the hardest of Tasmania's hut-based bush walks. An out and back track climbs to the 1446m summit of the highest peak in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
5. Overland Track (80k, 2800m +/-)
Arguably Australia's premier bushwalk, this internationally renowned track stretches from Ronnie Creek to beautiful Lake St Clair.
6. Three Capes Track (52km, 2300 +/-)
An epic journey in the Tasman National Park leads through a myriad of landscapes and exhilarating cliff-top outlooks on Cape Pillar, Cape Hauy, and stunning views of Cape Raoul.
7. Freycinet Peninsula Loop (29km, 1200 +/-)
One of the most breathtaking coastal peninsulas in Australia! The Freycinet National Park showcases beautiful crystal waters, stunning granite peaks and thriving wildlife.
