Project Mask RI: To Protect Those Protecting Us

Donation protected
As COVID-19 continues to spread through the state of Rhode Island, now is the time to act! It is more important than ever that individuals do whatever they can to protect their communities. One easy way to take action is to make face masks at home using basic household supplies.

Project Mask RI is a rapidly growing grassroots effort to produce and distribute masks to local communities. We are raising money to purchase the materials required to make our simple face mask designs.

We aim:
- To provide safe, affordable, and accessible masks to local communities, especially folks who are still expected to go in to work;
- To provide accessible templates for both face mask production and community organizing;
- To support health care workers by “flattening the curve” and slowing transmission, alleviating the strain on lifesaving medical equipment like ventilators;
- To organize individuals for the benefit of their local communities while practicing social distancing;
- To educate the public on best practices around sanitation and transmission prevention;
- And to replace fear and a sense of powerlessness with action and hope.

We're setting an ambitious goal for ourselves: get 200 volunteers across Rhode Island to commit to making cloth masks, and 100 to commit to making paper masks. Assuming volunteers are able to give on average 3 hours of their time to this effort, we have calculated a budget of $3,000 to cover the supplies of MORE THAN 6,000 MASKS.

If you are unable to dedicate your time to help make these masks, a monetary donation of any size can make a huge impact on this project. Volunteers who are eager to start are already purchasing supplies, hoping for reimbursement as soon as possible.

Production
Proper sanitation and personal hygiene is essential to safe face mask production. Each face mask must be individually packaged, marked with the date completed, and held for 5 days before distribution or use. This standard is based on initial research by the WHO that suggests the virus can live on surfaces for up to several days.

Handling & Use
Paper face masks are intended to be disposable and should not be worn more than once. Cloth face masks must be sanitized in a bleach wash between uses.
Hands must be thoroughly washed before face masks are handled and worn. After use, masks should be removed by their straps and discarded in a closed bin. Hands must be washed immediately after contact with the mask.
