Project Peanut: from rescue to forever

The story…

Meet Peanut. We first spotted her while walking a friend’s puppy along the beach in Bali - skinny, sad-eyed, and completely alone. Something didn’t feel right, and we made a promise to check in on her the following morning, taking her food and water.

That’s when we found her, curled up on the shore of the sea, barely conscious and covered in blood, it was as if she was ready to let the sea take her.

We rushed her to the vet, not realising just how bad things were.

Initially, we’d been focussed on her open neck wound where the majority of blood was coming from, thinking it was a single dog attack. The vet confirmed Peanut had been attacked by two or three dogs… she needed 17 open wounds stitched, was suffering from mild anemia, and had low platelet levels. An X-ray showed blood in her lungs, likely from the trauma. She was in survival mode, but her sweet nature still continued to shine through during her hospital stay. Within a couple of days of returning with us to our villa, we’ve witnessed Peanut’s first smile (that barely leaves her face now), first tail wag and within a couple of weeks she’d started teething - showing that normal puppy activity had resumed!

She’s the perfect companion, and holds no trauma from her attack. When we cautiously returned to the beach, she looked right at home, venturing over to other dogs to play and licking their faces in a sign of affection.

Unfortunately, we’re not in the position to keep Peanut and our biggest priority is to relocate her to a home where she is not at risk of poisonings, theft for dog meat, and ceremonial sacrifice (as she’s a belang bungkem dog Peanut could be stolen for sacrifice if she’s allowed to free roam).

We’re raising £3,000 to cover her finding a forever home. If we raise more than we need, we’ll be donating the remainder directly to Bali shelters who are incredibly overwhelmed and overcapacity - including the ones we first turned to when we found her and have helped provide advice.

Every little bit helps - whether it’s a donation or simply sharing Peanut’s story. Thank you for being part of this journey.
