First Firefighter To Summit Mount Everest In Kit

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Rhys Fitzgerald, and in 2025, I will attempt something that has never been done before: I will be the first person to climb Mount Everest in firefighting Kit and to represent the UK Fire Service.
This is not just about summiting the world’s highest peak this is about breaking barriers, challenging the limits of human strength, and using that journey to raise awareness for causes that matter deeply to me.
But I can’t do it alone. I need your help to make this dream a reality.
I’m climbing for three incredible causes that I hold close to my heart: Mind Mental Health, The Fire Fighters Charity, and the Nimsdai Foundation’s Clean Up Project. These organisations are on the frontlines, making a real difference in the lives of people who are struggling whether with mental health, physical recovery, or the urgent need to protect our environment. This journey is about all of us, coming together to make a change.
Why Mental Health?
For me, this cause is personal. I’ve seen how mental health affects those around me—my family, my friends, and my colleagues in the Fire Service. We are all human, and we all face struggles, yet so many of us suffer in silence. As a firefighter, I’ve responded to countless emergencies, witnessing the trauma and devastation that often comes with our work. But what people don’t always see is the silent toll it takes on those who serve—on us, the ones who run into danger.
I’ve struggled with mental health myself. There were times when the weight of it all felt unbearable. But one thing I’ve learned is this: it’s okay not to be okay. And it’s so important to talk—to reach out to others, whether it’s a colleague, a friend, or a family member. No matter how big or small the issue is, seeking help is the first step toward healing. That’s why I’m doing this. To raise awareness. To remind people that there is hope, and there is strength in asking for support.
Why Climb?
The mountains have always been my escape—a place where I can clear my mind, breathe, and find peace in nature. They’ve been my refuge, my therapy. The physical and mental challenge of climbing pushes me beyond my limits, but it also helps me reset, refocus, and recharge. It’s here, on the side of these great mountains, that I found my courage to face my own demons—and now, I want to share that courage with others.
I am climbing Mount Everest not only to challenge myself, but to inspire others to rise above their struggles, to take the first step toward healing, and to show the world that mental health should never be ignored. I want to break records and break stigmas—because we are stronger when we stand together.
The Clean-Up Project
The Nimsdai Foundation Clean Up is also a key part of this mission. As I climb, I’ll be collecting litter and waste along the way, helping to preserve these beautiful mountains for future generations. The environment is something we must protect, and I want to use my journey to remind people of our shared responsibility to care for the planet.
How You Can Make a Difference
This climb isn’t just about me. It’s about all of us. It’s about breaking down barriers, raising awareness, and supporting the people who need it most. Every donation you make will be split 50/50: half will go towards covering the costs of my expedition, and half will go directly to the charities I’m supporting. Every penny above the target will go straight to these organisations—directly helping those in need.
You don’t just have to donate—you can be a part of this journey. Join me in the challenges leading up to the climb, spread the word, and help make this mission a success.
