Medical Resources for Vanautu

Donation protected
Vanuatu is an independent island in the South West Pacific with a population of 250,000 spread over 65 of 83 islands.  The capital is Port Vila on the Island Efaté.

The government health care system whilst logically structured remains severely under resourced. Port Vila Central Hospital is Vanuatu’s only 'tertiary' hospital and is made up of 136 beds, divided between medical, surgical, paediatric and maternity wards. Vanuatu does not yet have government funded ambulance service.

Promedical is a non-government organisation which provides 24-hour intensive care paramedic ambulance services on the island of Efaté. Core values of the ambulance service include adhering to international standards for equipment and patient care, professionalism of staff, responding to calls for assistance on a 24-hour basis and providing accessibility for all. Promedical provides additional services which include local and overseas aero medical evacuations, pre hospital medical assistance and first aid training. Promedical also operates Vanuatu’s only hyperbaric chamber on behalf of an US company.

Promedical is highly respected throughout the country as well as internationally and caters its services to locals, expats and tourists. Promedical’s mission is to provide reliable and affordable emergency medical services to the Port Vila community. Promedical currently receives no funding from the government or any aid agencies and relies on sponsorship from local business, donations and fundraising.

The Australian Catholic University (ACU) has developed a partnership, which sees students working alongside Promedical Staff. A number of 4th year, Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine students will be travelling to Vanuatu in July 2016, in order to maintain and further these professional relationships. Part of the student commitment to undertaking a short-term international placement within Port Villa is to raise much-needed funds for the host services. These can include but are not limited to Promedical, Port Villa Central Hospital, Vanuatu Center for Nurse Education and rural and remote health clinics.

In previous years, student funding has enabled the purchase of a range of equipment such as blood glucose machines, sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, plaster cutters and digital thermometers. In addition student fundraising was used to provide a range of disposable equipment for use in the health setting including gloves, hand wash, tape, scissors, theatre hats, shoe covers and masks. All consumable materials used by students on placement within Vanuatu were provided in order to prevent draining already limited resources.
